1. the pillows (ザ・ピロウズ) are an alternative rock band from Hokkaidō, Japan, best known outside Japan for their contributions to the soundtrack of the anime series FLCL (Fooly Cooly).
They consist of 山中さわお (Sawao Yamanaka) -vocals & guitar-, 真鍋吉明 (Yoshiaki Manabe) -guitar-, 佐藤シンイチロウ (Shinichiro Sato) -drums-.
The band officially formed on September 16, 1989 as a four-man group. The fourth man and original bassist, 上田ケンジ (Kenji Ueda), left the band in 1992 to become a music producer and do solo work. Since then, 鹿島達也 (Tatsuya Kashima) and later 鈴木淳 (Jun Suzuki) have taken his place as supporting bassists. Neither Kashima nor Suzuki have been named official members out of respect for Ueda.

The lyrics of The Pillows's song "ターミナル・へヴンズ・ロック" paint a vivid picture of a chaotic and disordered world filled with contradictions and uncertainties. The opening lines set the tone with imagery of swallowing aspirin while watching a TV show, symbolizing a desire to numb oneself from the overwhelming and often conflicting information bombarding us. The reference to a commentator who is both white and black in their opinions highlights the confusion and lack of clarity in the media landscape, making it difficult to discern truth from fiction.
The mention of a bomb scare and barking dogs suggests a sense of imminent danger and unrest, but the singer maintains a sense of detachment, indicating a feeling of being removed from the chaos and turmoil surrounding them. This sense of apathy is further emphasized by the reference to a "disorderly religion" and a familiar sense of emptiness, implying a lack of fulfillment and purpose in the world.
The chorus of the song, with its repeated refrain of "Terminal heaven's rock," captures the theme of contradictions and paradoxes present throughout the lyrics. The idea of a "Terminal heaven" suggests a final destination or endpoint, while the concept of "rock" conveys a sense of stability and grounding. This juxtaposition creates a sense of tension and ambiguity, reflecting the complexities of life and existence.
Overall, the lyrics of "ターミナル・へヴンズ・ロック" by The Pillows offer a deep and introspective exploration of modern society and the internal struggles we face in navigating a world filled with uncertainty, contradictions, and unfulfilled desires. The song captures a sense of detachment and resignation, yet also hints at a yearning for something more meaningful and transcendent amidst the chaos and confusion of everyday life.
