Beginning with a psychedelic sound indebted to space rock and shoegazer music, by the mid-1990s the band had released several EPs and two acclaimed records. They also endured name and lineup changes, breakups, health problems, drug abuse and various lawsuits. The band's commercial breakthrough was Urban Hymns and its single Bitter Sweet Symphony, which became a massive worldwide hit.
Soon after this commercial peak, the band quit amid creative struggles within, and Ashcroft went onto a successful solo career. Tong briefly joined Blur as a replacement for Graham Coxon. It is rumored that Simon Jones did a studio album with Ari Pap of the Floor Monks called 'Aint Nothing To It' and was never released because they both had bigger projects going on at the time. Close family and friends assure us its a fabulous indie/rock/alternate album and they really wish it would have been released.
The Verve were chosen to close the 2008 Glastonbury festival which they did with a set based on the classic 1997 album 'Urban Hymns'.

So Sister
The Verve Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
As it rolled out of town
Just in case my love for you
Might be found
I cried my tears in a mountain stream
They'll sting you one day
I called your name in a giant cave
It echoes to this day
So sister, you're hearing how I miss her
But I don't think that she's hearing my calls
So sister, you're hearing how I miss her
But I don't think that she's hearing my calls
No, I don't think that I'm helping my cause
I wrote our names on a subway wall
Just in case you called
I rent a room and it's just for two
But where are you?
So sister, you're hearing how I miss her
But I don't think that she's hearing my calls
So sister, you're hearing how I miss her
But I don't think that she's helping my cause
No I don't think that I'm helping my cause
No I don't think that I'm helping my cause
No I don't think that I'm helping my cause
So sister, you're hearing how I miss her
But I don't think that she's hearing my calls
So sister, I need to be with her
But I don't think that she's hearing my calls
No, I don't think that I'm helping my cause
No, I don't think that I'm helping my cause
The Verve's song "So Sister" tells a story of unrequited love and the pain and desperation that comes with it. The singer of the song is hopelessly in love with someone who doesn't seem to reciprocate his feelings. He writes her name in dust and on a subway wall, presumably in the hopes of catching her attention. He cries his tears in a mountain stream, hoping that they will somehow make her feel his pain.
The chorus of the song is a plea to the singer's sister, who seems to be the only one who will listen. He tells her how much he misses the object of his affection and how much he needs to be with her. But despite his desperation, he knows that his calls are going unanswered. He doesn't believe that he's helping his cause, and he seems resigned to the fact that his love will never be returned.
Overall, "So Sister" is a poignant and heart-wrenching portrayal of unrequited love. The lyrics are simple but deeply emotional, and they paint a vivid picture of the singer's pain and desperation.
