Beginning with a psychedelic sound indebted to space rock and shoegazer music, by the mid-1990s the band had released several EPs and two acclaimed records. They also endured name and lineup changes, breakups, health problems, drug abuse and various lawsuits. The band's commercial breakthrough was Urban Hymns and its single Bitter Sweet Symphony, which became a massive worldwide hit.
Soon after this commercial peak, the band quit amid creative struggles within, and Ashcroft went onto a successful solo career. Tong briefly joined Blur as a replacement for Graham Coxon. It is rumored that Simon Jones did a studio album with Ari Pap of the Floor Monks called 'Aint Nothing To It' and was never released because they both had bigger projects going on at the time. Close family and friends assure us its a fabulous indie/rock/alternate album and they really wish it would have been released.
The Verve were chosen to close the 2008 Glastonbury festival which they did with a set based on the classic 1997 album 'Urban Hymns'.

Stormy Clouds
The Verve Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
How my life seemed to change in a matter of days
The heavens break I am walking tall
How come change always seems to bring the rain
Stormy clouds, new horizons
Come and get it, if you want to
So hop on the train 'Cause it kills the pain
Believe me this boy here is sinking
Just drinking
These streets, these times
They tie me down through with you
But I feel no pain
Stormy clouds, new horizons
The Verve's song "Stormy Clouds" reflects a change in life and the challenges faced in moving forward. The lyrics express how the singer of the song is trying to share their story with someone, possibly a listener or someone who has been part of their journey. The singer tells how their life has undergone a drastic change in a matter of days, and the heavens seem to have opened up for them, and they feel in control of their destiny. However, the singer also expresses how every change seems to bring rain, which symbolizes a sense of difficulty and challenge in adapting to the new changes in life.
The lyrics also portray different metaphors like "Blues player going to another town," which could represent a change in location or a new start. The singer acknowledges that they're sinking and that they are just drinking, representing a sense of escapism. The chorus of Stormy Clouds gives an opportunity to start new, to move forward into the unknown with a sense of optimism, to embark on the journey, even though it's uncertain.
