He's a singer, songwriter, author, poet, and multi-instrumentalist, who has been a professional musician since 1958. He plays a variety of instruments, including the guitar, harmonica, keyboards, drums, and saxophone. Featuring his characteristic growl - a unique mix of folk, blues, Irish, scat, and Celtic influences - Morrison is widely considered one of the most unusual and influential vocalists in the history of rock and roll. He has received numerous music awards during his career, including six Grammy Awards (1996β2007); inductions into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame (January 1993), the Songwriters Hall of Fame (June 2003), and the Irish Music Hall of Fame (September 1999); and a Brit Award (February 1994).
Known as "Van the Man" by his fans, Morrison first rose to prominence as the lead singer of the Northern Irish band Them, writing their 1964 hit "Gloria". A few years later, Morrison left the band for a successful solo career, starting with the album Astral Weeks.
Morrison has pursued an idiosyncratic musical path. Much of his music is tightly structured around the conventions of American soul and R&B, such as the popular singles "Brown Eyed Girl", "Moondance", "Domino", and "Wild Night". An equal part of his catalogue consists of lengthy, loosely connected, spiritually inspired musical journeys that show the influence of Celtic tradition, jazz, and stream-of-consciousness narrative, such as his classic album Astral Weeks and lesser known works such as Veedon Fleece and Common One. The two strains together are sometimes referred to as "Celtic Soul," and Morrison rejects the characterization of his genre of music as Rock, citing Elvis Presley as a non-influence.
He continues to perform regularly and achieved his highest U.S. chart position (number ten on the Billboard 200) with his 2008 album, Keep It Simple.

Them Lyrics
Like to tell you 'bout my baby
You know she comes around
Just 'bout five feet-four

You know she comes around here
At just about midnight
She make me feel so good, Lord
She make me feel alright
And her name is G

G-L-O-R-I-A (Gloria)
G-L-O-R-I-A (Gloria)

Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah
She comes around here
Just about midnight
She make me feel so good, Lord
I want to say she make me feel alright
Comes walkin' down my street
Woah, she comes up to my house
She knock upon my door
And then she comes to my room
And she make me feel alright
G-L-O-R-I-A (Gloria)
G-L-O-R-I-A (Gloria)
I'm gonna shout it all night (Gloria)
I'm gonna shout it every day (Gloria)
Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah
So good (Gloria)

Feels so good (Gloria)
Alright, yeah

I met Van Morrison and Them when they were on tour in 1964. Gloria was brand new, and they were getting very popular. I met them at the Ector County courthouse lawn, where I was a young kid spraying it for weeds. The lawn was lush and green - the pride of Odessa, Tx. They drove up in a Rolls Royce, which looked very strange to me, having only seen Chevy's and Ford's at the time.
They got out and walked to the sidewalk. I immediately saw them as hippies. I said "Oh my gosh, if the police see them, they're going to get arrested!"
Then one of them pulled out a camera and started to walk across the lawn. I immediately walked over there with my sprayer and told him to get off the lawn or he would be arrested! He complied and moved to the sidewalk. Then I asked them "You guys aren't from around here, are you?" One of them said "No, we're from Great Britain." I asked them what they were dong in town, and he said "We're going to play at a concert at the Ector County coliseum. Do you know where that is?" I couldn't believe it! Gloria was getting mucho air time on the radio, and I asked "Are you Them?" They said "Yes, are you going?" I told them I didn't have the money to attend concerts, and one of them signaled to the other to go to the car and get something. When he returned, he handed me 3 tickets and asked me if I would attend. I emphatically said "Yes I will!" He said they'd be looking for me, and they left.
So two of my friends and I attended the concert. We couldn't believe live music sounded so great! Then it was time for intermission. The lead signer jumped off the stage and came directly to me. He said he had seen me in the crowd and asked me if I was enjoying the concert. I emphatically said "You guys sound much better than the record on the radio!"
And that, folks, was when I met Van Morrison. Gloria was just getting play time and rapidly increasing in popularity.

Itβs wild just how based Van ended up becoming, such an outlier from his boomer colleagues.

@Jay Cool story! I remember those bands well!
Do you remember how green and lush the Ector County Courthouse lawn was. It was because a certain old Mr. Parker was the main supervisor leading efforts to keep them clean and healthy. I worked for him under a federal program designed to help Mexican-American kids with earned cash, not given. He would pick us up every day, we we rode in the back of his truck to the parks. He did four groups each time.
After observing our work progress and quality, he chose me to maintain the St. Augustine courthouse lawn under his constant scrutiny. I did more than spray the lawn. I fertilized, pulled the few weeds along the concrete edges, treated the soil with alkaline or dolomite to control pH, and tested the irrigation system. It never had fungi, because Odessa was and is too dry. Mr. Parker taught me a lot.
Mr. Parker and I both got compliments from the big wigs coming in and out. That's why I told THEM to get off my grass. We didn't want the grass trampled. BTW, I attended Ector Jr. and Sr. High, and I joined the Air Force after graduation in 1968.
