In the Dark of the Night
Jim Cummings Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

In the dark of the night I was tossing and turning
And the nightmare I had was as bad as can be
It scared me out of my wits
A corpse falling to bits!
Then I opened my eyes
And the nightmare was, me

I was once the most mystical man in all Russia
When the royals betrayed me they mad a mistake
My curse made each of them pay
But one little girl got away
Little Anya, beware
Rasputin's awake

In the dark of the night evil will find her
In the dark of the night just before dawn!

Revenge will be sweet
When the curse is complete
In the dark of the night

She'll be gone
I can feel that my powers are slowly returning
Tie my sash and a dash of cologne for that smell
As the Pieces fall into place
I'll see her crawl into place
Do Svidaniya, Anya, Your Grace
Farewell

In the dark of the night terror will strike her!
Terror's the least I can do!
In the dark of the night evil will brew.

Soon she will feel that her nightmares are real.
In the dark of the night
She'll be through!

In the dark of the night
Evil will find her
Find her!
Ooh!
In the dark of the night terror comes true.
Doom her!

My dear, here's a sign
It's the end of the line

In the dark of the night
In the dark of the night
In the dark of the night

Come my minions
Rise for your master
Let your evil shine
Find her now
Yes, fly ever faster

In the dark of the night
In the dark of the night
In the dark of the night
She'll be mine!

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Jim Cummings's song "In the Dark of the Night" are taken from the animated movie "Anastasia" (1997). In this song, the character of Rasputin, a former respected advisor of Tsar Nicholas II, curses the Romanov family after they exiled him, causing them to be killed during the Russian Revolution. However, one of the Romanov's daughters, Anastasia, survives and Rasputin is determined to find and kill her to complete his revenge.

The first verse of the song reveals Rasputin's nightmare, where he sees himself as a corpse falling apart. This nightmare symbolizes his mental and physical state after being exiled and betrayed by the royal family. He then remembers the curse he put on the Romanovs, which led to their demise, with the exception of Anastasia. Rasputin is determined to find her and complete his revenge. The song's chorus builds up the sense of danger and evil that will come in the dark of the night. The song ends with Rasputin calling his minions to help him find Anastasia and claiming that she will be his.

Overall, the song speaks of betrayal, revenge, and the unwavering desire for power, power to the point of corrupting everything and everyone. Rasputin's character in the song depicts the consequences of such desires, where his lust for power leads him to his own demise.

The gunshots you hear twice in the song are much more creepy when you know the history
1:26
“My curse made each of the pay, but one little girl got away!” BANG
This has 2 references
The first is Rasputin’s supposed curse that Russia would soon face ruin.
The second is to when the Soviets executed the Tsar’s family, Anastasia didn’t die immediately, as she has sewed Jewels into her dress so the soldiers didn’t take them, which slightly protected her from the original volley.
2:08
The second gun shot
“I’ll see her crawl into place!” BANG is a reference to the story that when they went to move the bodies, Anastasia and her brother Alexi were crawling slightly so they shot them again.

Is this movie historically inaccurate?
Very.
Does that bother me?
Not even a little.

@rougefyre2635

Thank you!!! People who complain about the inaccurate plot lines really annoy me.

@meta527II

People are such hypocrites for hating Pocahontas for this but praising Ansastasia for this. Granted I like this movie more of the two, but still

@trevork1413

@@meta527II think you nailed it on the head when you said you liked this one more. If you find more things to enjoy in something the more forgiving you can be with it. I agree tho, I like this one too

@puterboy2

Same with The Greatest Showman?

@ettinakitten5047

@@meta527II I think some are criticizing Pocahontas more because of how horribly the real John Smith allegedly treated the Powhatan people. It'd be like writing a romance about Boudica's daughter falling in love with a Roman general.
