Do You Believe in Rapture?
Sonic Youth Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Stand behind his light of love
Hear him yell his bloody tongue
Hear him yell of blood and war
Do you believe in his sweet sensation?
Do you believe in second chance?
Do you believe in rapture, babe?
A terrible hit strikes today
A terrible hit for the parade
Burning eyes see Jesus coming
Jesus comes to pave the way
Do you believe in his sweet sensation?
Do you believe in second chance?
Do you believe in rapture, babe?
Can you tell me what to feel?
Open up your tender soul
Can I drink your drunken mercy?
Wine burns the devil's home
Do you believe in his sweet sensation?
Do you believe in second chance?
Do you believe in rapture, babe?
The lyrics to Sonic Youth's song Do You Believe in Rapture? address themes of religion, war, second chances, and the idea of being saved. The first verse describes a figure who appears to be drunk and bloodthirsty, yelling about war and love. The chorus poses the question of whether or not the listener believes in the possibility of a sweet sensation or a second chance, and ultimately, whether or not they believe in the concept of rapture. The second verse describes a hit on a parade and the anticipation of Jesus paving the way.
The third verse changes the tone slightly, with the singer asking for guidance and opening up their soul to the listener, possibly seeking absolution or salvation. The final line mentions wine burning the devil's home, which could be a reference to religious sacraments or the idea of cathartic release through alcohol.
Overall, the song seems to be grappling with the complex and sometimes contradictory nature of faith and belief, both in a religious sense and a broader sense of what it means to place trust in something greater than oneself.

When I saw them live the first time they played Mote and then after a good 8-10 minutes of feedback at the end of Mote they transitioned into this song. It was amazing.

@@mercurialmagictrees actually I do believe in rapture watching it unfold in 20/20. What are the odds that when I was growing up that 20/20 was the major news program and now I can just open my front door.........snaps all around.

I really did find this band at the right time. I only knew their pop singles from goo and dirty for many years but I've finally been digging into their whole discography. I'm buying every original vinyl press. All of their music is amazing.
