The first verse of the song begins with a couple separating under the umbrella in the rain in the town of Otaru. As the season approaches autumn, the woman clings to the man's back, crying while seagulls cry out on the sea. The second verse speaks about the canal in the evenings and how it is dyed with the sunset. The singer remembers the tears of that day and wonders if the woman he once loved still lives in the northern town they parted in. The third verse speaks of the snow that reminds him of how he feels about the woman. He wonders if she still trembles with loneliness in the freezing Otaru canal, and whether she is happy in the city he once loved.
The final verse speaks of a moment the singer remembers waiting for the dawn at a seaside bar. He remembers staring into the distance, watching the shadow that he doesn't want to forget. He speaks of waiting for spring on the Otaru Canal because he wants to meet his beloved once again. The song seems to express feelings of nostalgia and longing for a past love in the town where the couple parted.
