Souchon signed his first contract in 1971, but had no success until he began to collaborate with composer/arranger Laurent Voulzy ; they would write together, but each released albums under his own name. Souchon's first hit was "J'ai 10 ans" (1974), from the album of the same name. Souchon's biggest hit was probably "Foule Sentimentale" from 1995's C'est Deja ca. His recent album is from 2005, called La Vie Theodore which features his song "Et si en plus, y'a personne" [What if, even more, there is no one], a song condemning religious intolerance.
He wrote the theme for François Truffaut's 1979 film Love on the Run (L'amour en fuite).

La vie comme un éclair
Les légumes verts, bon
Et de nos toujours clairs
Faire une petite affaire passagère, non
Pour qu'elle soit longue longue
L'histoire de nous
Jusqu'au bout
Normandie Lusitania
Normandie Lusitania
Sur la terre dans vos tiroirs
Nos caresses
A toute vitesse elles se barrent
A toute vitesse
Normandie Lusitania
Normandie Lusitania
Plus longtemps
Peut-être que sur les paquebots lents
Notre amour irait plus longtemps
Plus longtemps
Plus longtemps
De Cole Porter les beaux vêtements
De Blue moon le balancement
Plus longtemps
Les dimanches passent passent
Le Puc Villeurbanne
Y'a du café dans les tasses
Devant la lucarne
Normandie Lusitania
Normandie Lusitania
Puisque cow-boy Marlboro
C'était écrit
Prendra mes bronches au lasso
Et tout sera fini
Normandie Lusitania
Normandie Lusitania
Plus longtemps
Peut-être que sur les paquebots lents
Notre amour irait plus longtemps
Plus longtemps
Plus longtemps
De Cole Porter les beaux vêtements
De Blue moon le balancement
Plus longtemps
Que dans les coursives
Un soir trop ému
Et d'une manière excessive
Je te tue, bon
Mais de nos jours clairs
Faire
Une petite affaire passagère
Non
The lyrics of Alain Souchon's song "Normandie Lusitania" tell the story of a relationship that is destined to fail due to the pressures and challenges of everyday life. The opening lines "L'amour familistère familistère, la vie comme un éclair" refer to the idea of a "familistère" or cooperative living community, where love and life are fleeting and fast-paced. The reference to "legumes verts" or green vegetables suggests a simple and healthy lifestyle, but also implies a lack of excitement or variety.
The chorus, "Normandie Lusitania," references two famous ocean liners, both of which were symbols of luxury and comfort during the early 20th century. The juxtaposition of these grand vessels with the mundane details of everyday life (such as "Puc Villeurbanne" or a small town in France) highlights the singer's longing for escape and adventure.
The verses highlight different aspects of the relationship - from the fleeting moments of passion ("Nos caresses/A toute vitesse elles se barrent") to the fear of mortality and loss ("Prendra mes bronches au lasso/Et tout sera fini"). Ultimately, the song suggests that despite their best efforts to prolong their love, the couple is doomed to fail because of the limitations of their circumstances.
