King's major success began in the 1960s when she and her first husband, Gerry Goffin, wrote more than two dozen chart hits, many of which have become standards, for numerous artists. She has continued writing for other artists since then. King's success as a performer in her own right did not come until the 1970s, when she sang her own songs, accompanying herself on the piano, in a series of albums and concerts. After experiencing commercial disappointment with her debut album Writer, King scored her breakthrough with the album Tapestry, which topped the U.S. album chart for 15 weeks in 1971 and remained on the charts for more than six years.
King has made 25 solo albums, the most successful being Tapestry, which held the record for most weeks at No. 1 by a female artist for more than 20 years. Her record sales were estimated at more than 75 million copies worldwide. She has won four Grammy Awards and was inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame. She has been inducted twice into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, as a performer and songwriter. She is the recipient of the 2013 Library of Congress Gershwin Prize for Popular Song, the first woman to be so honored. She is also a 2015 Kennedy Center Honoree.

I've been counting down the days
Finally we'll have some fun, he's got hugs for everyone
Word is out, and we can't wait
Things are gonna be so great
Once phillipe is on the scene, everything is peachy clean
Dressed like a bumblebee, with your special kind of glee
Oh phillipe, oh phillipe, you're a very special boy
Cause you're squeaky clean, standing on the drum machine
When im sad, feeling blue
You're so rad, needing you
When im down, you come through
Don't you frown, i've got you
When im sad (hugs), feeling blue (hugs)
You're so rad (hugs), needing you (hugs)
When im down (hugs), you come through (hugs)
Don't you frown (hugs), i've got you (hugs!)
Here comes, a special, here comes a very special
Here comes, a special, here comes a very special boy
There are lots of boys around, the special ones are very rare
There aren't many to be found, we've been looking everywhere
Things were starting to look bleak, until we heard about phillipe
We're in need of desperate cheer, don't give up hope he's almost here
Oh phillipe, oh phillipe, you bring us very special joy
Dressed like a bumblebee, with your special kind of glee
Oh phillipe, oh phillipe, you're a very special boy
Cause you're squeaky clean, standing on the drum machine
When im sad, feeling blue
You're so rad, needing you
When im down, you come through
Don't you frown, i've got you
When im sad (hugs), feeling blue (hugs)
You're so rad (hugs), needing you (hugs?)
When im down (hugs), you come through (hugs)
Don't you frown (hugs), i've got you (hugs!)
Here comes, a special, here comes a very special
Here comes, a special, here comes a very special
Here comes, a special, here comes a very special boy
The lyrics to Carole King's song A Very Special Boy seem to be about the anticipation of the arrival of Phillipe, who is a very special boy. The singer has been counting down the days for Phillipe's arrival, knowing that he will bring hugs and joy to everyone. They refer to Phillipe's dress as a bumblebee and his special kind of glee. The singer recognizes how rare it is to find a special boy like Phillipe and how much they need his cheer in their lives. The chorus repeats Phillipe's name with admiration and excitement, celebrating his uniqueness and the joy he brings.
The second verse seems to be about the singer's relationship with Phillipe. When the singer is feeling sad and blue, Phillipe is there to make everything better. Phillipe's presence makes the singer feel rad, and when they're feeling down, he comes through for them. The singer concludes the verse by saying that when they are feeling any type of negative emotions, they have Phillipe's reassuring hugs.
In the end, the song seems to be about celebrating the presence of a very special boy and the joy and comfort that he brings to those around him. The lyrics paint Phillipe as a unique and rare being who brings happiness to those around him just by being himself.
