King's major success began in the 1960s when she and her first husband, Gerry Goffin, wrote more than two dozen chart hits, many of which have become standards, for numerous artists. She has continued writing for other artists since then. King's success as a performer in her own right did not come until the 1970s, when she sang her own songs, accompanying herself on the piano, in a series of albums and concerts. After experiencing commercial disappointment with her debut album Writer, King scored her breakthrough with the album Tapestry, which topped the U.S. album chart for 15 weeks in 1971 and remained on the charts for more than six years.
King has made 25 solo albums, the most successful being Tapestry, which held the record for most weeks at No. 1 by a female artist for more than 20 years. Her record sales were estimated at more than 75 million copies worldwide. She has won four Grammy Awards and was inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame. She has been inducted twice into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, as a performer and songwriter. She is the recipient of the 2013 Library of Congress Gershwin Prize for Popular Song, the first woman to be so honored. She is also a 2015 Kennedy Center Honoree.

But it's Sunday
And when I get to the door of the ice cream store
It says closed
Sitting down on the sidewalk
I feel like I'm gonna cry
You can call me silly but I don't think I am
And here's why
I'm disappointed disappointed
I didn't get what I wanted
I might get over it someday
But for now I think I'll stay
Disappointed that's all
Shelly's coming over for a play date and I can't wait
But just before the doorbell rings
The telephone does and it brings
The bad news
Shelly's mom says she's not coming
She's come down with the flu
We were gonna have some fun but now there's
Nothing to do
I'm disappointed
I didn't get what I wanted
I might get over it someday
But for now I think I'll stay
Disappointed that's all
Woke up yesterday and it was snowing
I won't be going
I lay in bed and realized I was a little bit surprised
It felt good
Because the place that I was going
Wasn't circus it was school
Instead of being angry I was happy I was cool
Not disappointed
This time I got what I wanted
I didn't know it at first
Then I jumped up with a burst
Not disappointed that's all
Carole King's song "Disappointed" portrays a universal feeling of not getting what one wants. The song expresses the emotions that people experience in simple everyday situations in which they realize that their expectations are not going to be met. It simply tells a story of the disappointment that one feels when events do not match their expectations.
The first verse of the song describes a child who has planned on indulging in a chocolate sundae only to find out that the ice cream store is closed. Sitting on the sidewalk, feeling the tears welling up, the singer feels that their feelings are genuine and theirs to own. The second verse tells a story of a canceled play date because the other child's mother has taken ill, and they won't be able to have the fun they were planning on. The final verse, however, highlights that not all disappointments are bad things. The singer realizes they do not have to go to school due to snow, which they initially wanted until they saw the circus poster.
In short, the song "Disappointed" is a simple yet powerful narration that speaks of human emotions, a realization that we all face at some point in our lives. It is a song of resilience, highlighting that being disappointed is just part of life, and sometimes taking things in stride can lead to unanticipated joys down the path.
