King's major success began in the 1960s when she and her first husband, Gerry Goffin, wrote more than two dozen chart hits, many of which have become standards, for numerous artists. She has continued writing for other artists since then. King's success as a performer in her own right did not come until the 1970s, when she sang her own songs, accompanying herself on the piano, in a series of albums and concerts. After experiencing commercial disappointment with her debut album Writer, King scored her breakthrough with the album Tapestry, which topped the U.S. album chart for 15 weeks in 1971 and remained on the charts for more than six years.
King has made 25 solo albums, the most successful being Tapestry, which held the record for most weeks at No. 1 by a female artist for more than 20 years. Her record sales were estimated at more than 75 million copies worldwide. She has won four Grammy Awards and was inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame. She has been inducted twice into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, as a performer and songwriter. She is the recipient of the 2013 Library of Congress Gershwin Prize for Popular Song, the first woman to be so honored. She is also a 2015 Kennedy Center Honoree.

How Many Tears
Carole King Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
How many tears can you cry when you're sad and lonely?
And how many tears can you cry when someone makes you blue?
That's a question I'm still unable to answer
'Cause I can't stop my cryin' over you
(Yum diddy dum diddy um)
How many lies can you can you count when you just can't sleep at
Night?
And how many lies can you count before your heart is free?
That's a question I'm still unable to answer
'Cause I'm still countin' the lies you told to me
(Yum diddy dum diddy um)
There's just no end to all the broken promises that I recall
I was a fool to fall for you
It hurts to know you played a game and went and had yourself a ball
And through it all made me blue
(Yum diddy dum diddy um)
How many tears can you cry when it all is over?
And how many tears can you cry when you want someone new?
That's a question I'm still unable to answer
'Cause I can't stop my love for you
(Yum diddy dum diddy um)

That's a question I'm still unable to answer
'Cause I can't stop my love for you
How many tears
The lyrics to Carole King's song "How Many Tears" express the emotional turmoil and heartbreak experienced in a relationship. The song reflects on the pain and sadness associated with being lonely and mistreated by someone you once loved. The lyrics pose a series of rhetorical questions, emphasizing the singer's confusion and inability to find closure or move on from the hurt they have endured.
The repetition of the phrase "How many tears can you cry" emphasizes the overwhelming nature of the emotional burden. The lyrics suggest that the tears are a result of feeling sad, lonely, and betrayed, highlighting the impact of another person's actions on the singer's well-being. The questions about counting lies also reveal a sense of mistrust and deception in the relationship, further intensifying the emotional strain.
The mention of broken promises and the realization of being played for a fool adds another layer of bitterness and disappointment. The lyrics evoke a sense of regret for having been involved with someone who only brought pain and deceit. Despite the hurt, the singer confesses that they are unable to stop loving the person who caused their tears, suggesting a complex mix of emotions and a struggle to let go.
Overall, the lyrics of "How Many Tears" capture a profound sense of emotional turmoil, vulnerability, and longing, making it a relatable and poignant reflection on the darker aspects of love and relationships.
