King's major success began in the 1960s when she and her first husband, Gerry Goffin, wrote more than two dozen chart hits, many of which have become standards, for numerous artists. She has continued writing for other artists since then. King's success as a performer in her own right did not come until the 1970s, when she sang her own songs, accompanying herself on the piano, in a series of albums and concerts. After experiencing commercial disappointment with her debut album Writer, King scored her breakthrough with the album Tapestry, which topped the U.S. album chart for 15 weeks in 1971 and remained on the charts for more than six years.
King has made 25 solo albums, the most successful being Tapestry, which held the record for most weeks at No. 1 by a female artist for more than 20 years. Her record sales were estimated at more than 75 million copies worldwide. She has won four Grammy Awards and was inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame. She has been inducted twice into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, as a performer and songwriter. She is the recipient of the 2013 Library of Congress Gershwin Prize for Popular Song, the first woman to be so honored. She is also a 2015 Kennedy Center Honoree.

Make the Night a Little Longer
Carole King Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Till the stars are in the sky
And every night when we can be together
Time just seems to hurry by
[Chorus]
So Lord I'm beggin' you to make the night (just a little longer)
Make the night (just a little longer)
And hold him tight (just a little longer)
You made the world the way you thought it should be
So won't you make the night a little longer for me?
My nights are warm, 'cause when he hugs and holds me
Everything just feels so fine
But Lord, you know, I hate to see the sunlight
Takes away that man of mine
[Chorus]
(Just a little longer, just a little longer)
[Chorus]
Then embrace his arms (just a little longer)
Capture all of his charms (just a little longer)
Please Lord, make the night
"Make the Night a Little Longer" is a heartfelt plea from the singer to the Lord to extend the time she gets to spend with her loved one. The lyrics convey a sense of longing and impatience in the singer's desire to make the most of the limited time she has with her significant other. The opening lines, "My days are years 'cause I don't see my baby, Till the stars are in the sky," suggest that the time apart feels extremely long, as if each day without her partner feels like a year. The singer expresses a sense of urgency, wanting time to slow down or extend so that they can have more time together, as indicated in the chorus: "Make the night (just a little longer), So I can kiss him (just a little longer), And hold him tight (just a little longer)."
The song touches on the power of love, how it has the ability to make the nights feel warm and the moments spent together feel so fine. The line, "But Lord, you know, I hate to see the sunlight, Takes away that man of mine," suggests that the morning and the arrival of daylight symbolize the end of their time together, causing sadness and a sense of loss. The singer's plea to the Lord to make the night a little longer is a way of expressing the depths of love and desire for more time with her partner.
Overall, "Make the Night a Little Longer" captures the bittersweet emotions of longing, passion, and a yearning for more time with a loved one. It showcases Carole King's ability to convey deep emotions through poignant and relatable lyrics.
