King's major success began in the 1960s when she and her first husband, Gerry Goffin, wrote more than two dozen chart hits, many of which have become standards, for numerous artists. She has continued writing for other artists since then. King's success as a performer in her own right did not come until the 1970s, when she sang her own songs, accompanying herself on the piano, in a series of albums and concerts. After experiencing commercial disappointment with her debut album Writer, King scored her breakthrough with the album Tapestry, which topped the U.S. album chart for 15 weeks in 1971 and remained on the charts for more than six years.
King has made 25 solo albums, the most successful being Tapestry, which held the record for most weeks at No. 1 by a female artist for more than 20 years. Her record sales were estimated at more than 75 million copies worldwide. She has won four Grammy Awards and was inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame. She has been inducted twice into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, as a performer and songwriter. She is the recipient of the 2013 Library of Congress Gershwin Prize for Popular Song, the first woman to be so honored. She is also a 2015 Kennedy Center Honoree.

Deep in My Heart
Carole King Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Deep, deep in my heart
There's a strong, strong love for you
And when we're apart
Deep, deep in my heart
There's long, long, longing for you
I gave you my heart
That was the wrong, wrong thing to do
For now we're apart
And deep, deep in my heart
There's long, long, longing for you
When friends are around me
I never let it show
But when no one's around me
I know, I really know that
Deep in my heart
Deep, deep in my heart
There's a strong, strong love for you
I know in my heart
Deep, deep in my heart
I will belong, always belong to you
Always to you
The song, "Deep in My Heart" by Carole King, is a testament to the power of love and how it lingers long after two people have parted ways. The song's protagonist laments the reasons why their relationship failed, particularly in giving their heart away too easily at the start. Despite her best efforts to hide the pain among her friends, she cannot deny the feelings that persist "deep in my heart."
The chorus repeats the refrain of "deep in my heart," emphasizing how the love they once shared still resides within her, an ever-present reminder of what could have been. The lyrics of the song exude vulnerability, with the singer desperately clinging to the possibility that they will always belong to one another. The theme of unrequited love is a common one in pop music, but King's lyrics transcend the genre with their richness and poignancy.
Overall, "Deep in My Heart" is a beautiful song that exemplifies King's talent as a songwriter. Her introspective lyrics and raw emotional depth, coupled with her signature voice, create a powerful ballad that resonates with anyone who has experienced heartbreak.

Deep in my heart
I have a love for you that runs deep within my heart
Deep, deep in my heart
This love goes beyond surface level, it is all-encompassing
There's a strong, strong love for you
My love for you is powerful and unwavering
And when we're apart
Even in your absence, my love for you remains
There's long, long, longing for you
I yearn for you and miss you deeply
I gave you my heart
I entrusted you with my love and affection
Right, right from the start
From the very beginning of our relationship
That was the wrong, wrong thing to do
Perhaps I gave you my heart too quickly, without truly knowing you
For now we're apart
Our relationship has ended and we are no longer together
When friends are around me
In the company of others, I try to hide the depth of my feelings for you
I never let it show
I keep my emotions tucked away, so as not to appear vulnerable
But when no one's around me
When I am alone with my thoughts and feelings
I know, I really know that
Without a doubt, I am aware that
I know in my heart
I am confident and sure that
I will belong, always belong to you
My love for you is eternal and I will always be yours

"Beautiful"
You've got to get up every morning with a smile on your face
And show the world all the love in your heart
Then people gonna treat you better
You're gonna find, yes, you will
That you're beautiful as you feel
Waiting at the station with a workday wind a-blowing
I've got nothing to do but watch the passers-by
Mirrored in their faces I see frustration growing
And they don't see it showing, why do I?
You've got to get up every morning with a smile on your face
And show the world all the love in your heart
Then people gonna treat you better
You're gonna find, yes, you will
That you're beautiful as you feel
I have often asked myself the reason for sadness
In a world where tears are just a lullaby
If there's any answer, maybe love can end the madness
Maybe not, oh, but we can only try
You've got to get up every morning with a smile on your face
And show the world all the love in your heart
Then people gonna treat you better
You're gonna find, yes, you will
That you're beautiful as you feal
