King's major success began in the 1960s when she and her first husband, Gerry Goffin, wrote more than two dozen chart hits, many of which have become standards, for numerous artists. She has continued writing for other artists since then. King's success as a performer in her own right did not come until the 1970s, when she sang her own songs, accompanying herself on the piano, in a series of albums and concerts. After experiencing commercial disappointment with her debut album Writer, King scored her breakthrough with the album Tapestry, which topped the U.S. album chart for 15 weeks in 1971 and remained on the charts for more than six years.
King has made 25 solo albums, the most successful being Tapestry, which held the record for most weeks at No. 1 by a female artist for more than 20 years. Her record sales were estimated at more than 75 million copies worldwide. She has won four Grammy Awards and was inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame. She has been inducted twice into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, as a performer and songwriter. She is the recipient of the 2013 Library of Congress Gershwin Prize for Popular Song, the first woman to be so honored. She is also a 2015 Kennedy Center Honoree.

I tried, I called on the phone, but you weren't home again
I guess that you've made some other plans
So I'll just get out the cards
And round up a couple of hands
Looks like I'll spend another night with the boys
I know you are out on the town
You're runnin' around again
I guess I'll have to confess
That I've been wondering too
Why must I be denied the thrill of your kiss
What did I do to you to be treated like this
Why must I spend another night with the boys
Although their good company
I'd much rather be with you
Why can't you tell me, why can't you tell me baby what I've done wrong
And let me spend all my nights with you
Where I belong
The lyrics to Carole King's song "Another Night With the Boys" tell the tale of a woman who has been stood up or ignored by her significant other yet again. She attempts to call them on the phone, but they're not home, and she assumes they're out "runnin' around again." Instead of wallowing in self-pity, she decides to spend the night with her male friends, playing cards and enjoying their company. The chorus finds her wondering why she's been "denied the thrill" of her partner's kiss, unsure of what she did wrong to be treated like this. She'd much rather be with them, but she doesn't know how to fix the situation.
The verse expresses loneliness and frustration, while the chorus reveals her deep longing for her partner's presence. The song speaks to the universal themes of the difficulty of communication and the desire for affection from a loved one. The singer is tired of being kept in the dark about her partner's actions and feels powerless to change the situation. The song ends on a melancholic note, with the singer lamenting her fate and wishing she could be with her partner instead of "the boys."
