Le roi du monde

Hier j'étais le roi du monde
J'étais plus glissant que l'onde
Hier j'étais le roi du monde
Ma bouche était pleine et féconde
Aujourd'hui rien
Je ne soupçonne
En vérité
Rien de rien
Le soir venu, les angoissent reviennent
Je te le dis, comprends-moi, elles me tiennent.
Mauvaises raisons, mauvais choix
Qui me tirent vers le bas
Me répondent par des maux d'estomac
Mauvaises raisons, mauvais choix
Qui défilent devant moi
Me confondent
Et me laissent pantois
Hier j'étais le seul au monde
Je ne regardais que mon ombre
Hier j'étais bien seul au monde
Hier j'étais bien seul au monde
Aujourd'hui rien
Si je t'appelle
Je ne décèle
A ton sujet
Rien de bien
Le soir tombé, le doute s'insinue
Entre toi et moi, comprends, il me tue
Mauvaises raisons, mauvais choix
Qui me tirent vers le bas
Me répondent par des maux d'estomac
Mauvaises raisons, mauvais choix
Qui défilent devant moi
Me confondent
Et me laissent pantois
La nuit est pleine et je vois
Les possibles derrière moi
Je les traîne, qui les voit,
Ne me juge pas.
The song "Le roi du monde" by Debout sur le zinc is a melancholic reflection on the fleeting nature of personal power and confidence. The opening lines "Yesterday I was the king of the world, more slippery than the waves," describe a moment of exceptional self-assurance and control. However, in the second half of the verse, the singer admits that this feeling has vanished - "today nothing, if I trumpet, I suspect truly nothing at all."
The chorus "Bad reasons, bad choices, dragging me down, answering with stomach aches, confusing me and leaving me dumbfounded" refers to the debilitating after-effects of losing one's self-assurance. The second verse describes the isolation felt after the loss of confidence. "Yesterday I was alone in the world, I only looked at my shadow. Yesterday I was all alone in the world, today nothing." The second half of the verse expresses a sense of ambiguity about the singer's relationships with others – "If I call you, I detect nothing good about you."
The final verse "The night is full and I see the possibilities behind me, I drag them – who sees them, do not judge me" speaks to the cyclicality of this experience of confidence and loss. The singer seems to acknowledge that their current state may be temporary and fleeting, and that the possibility of reassuming control is still visible.
Overall, "Le roi du monde" is a poignant meditation on the fragility of human confidence and the fear of losing control, while also acknowledging the cyclical and transient nature of these emotions.
