1) "Earl" is the most recent project of singer-songwriter Nathan Allebach who formed the local collaboration "Earl & Raine". They released one full length album in October of 2011, but Nathan soon went on to start fresh with music he could call his own.

Based out of the Schwenksville area, he hosts the weekly open mic at Steel City Coffee House in Phoenixville, books and promotes concert events at Rock Cafe in Harleysville, and has been performing in the Philadelphia scene for three years, as well as playing with local bands "Oh Constantine" and "Former Belle".

Earl is currently is the studio recording his debut album "Beginnings" scheduled to be released in the spring with songs resonating the likes of City & Colour, The Decemberists, Rocky Votolato, and David Bazan.

2) Earl is a female American singer-songwriter based in the U.K, currently.

Earl was born to Charles and Pomposa Smithson in Anchorage, Alaska. She is of Filipino, Dutch and Welsh descent. She began playing piano at 4, sang in her church choir, and began playing the guitar when she was seventeen. The young singer nursed the dream to lead a musician's life in between shifts at her parent’s small-town gas station. That dream became a reality when Kate moved to Los Angeles in 2004, where her talent was promptly recognized and led to a record deal with The Record Collection. Her debut album, Fate Is the Hunter, was released in May 2005 under the name 'Kate Earl'.

After releasing 2 more studio albums under this name (self-titled 'Kate Earl' and 'Stronger'), Earl moved to the U.K. and began to pursue an independent musician life. She released an independent EP via Pledgemusic ('Ransom') under that name before striping it down completely to 'Earl'. Taking to music once more with a new name, she began to approach her music differently, returning to jazz roots and fussing pop and catchy melodies which garnered the attention of BBC Radio 2 several times over before she was interviewed by Dermot O'Leary live on BBC Radio 2.

In 2015, Earl released single 'Good Witch'.
In 2016, Earl released single 'I Love You.'
In 2017, Earl released single 'Tongue Tied' and announced that she was working on a new studio album.

This brings back great memories and a tear as well. As a teenager a friend and I were able to sneak into the club Fatha was playing, drink a few beers and enjoy ourselves, as long as we behaved. The concert halls and bars that had rockers ended up with fights, raids and sweeps by John Law, busting troublemakers and underage patrons. That never happened in jazz clubs. Far better clientele. (Late 1960s to 72 or so) it was amazing, going to see some of the same greats my parents saw during the 30s!

I have for a long time idolized Tatum - and still do. But there is a certain infectious, sensual quality Earl Hines has - plus he swung just as much as Tatum did. Tatum was a superb performer sure, but there are times when I would prefer Hines. His musicality is simply arresting.

I can only take tatum in small doses. The "circus act" aspect of his playing quickly becomes overbearing and exhausting. If you like Hines, check out Joe Sullivan too!

I've been exposed mostly to classical music and I think of all the jazz pianists, Tatum is the most attractive to hear to most classical fans, because of a certain "technical" and "structural" framework Tatum excels at. I've come to suspect that Tatum's style was more likely the exception than the rule - I've read in some places that some doubted Tatum as a "jazz" player. He seems to emphasize less the "swing" and "sweetness" of a lot of jazz music to my ear in favour of brilliance and exuberance.

In my opinion Tatum's style is all about freedom and sheer fun, as well as the capacity to match that. I think that he generally transcends feeling like a "circus act", though I don't have anything against the "circus" aspects of some styles of music in particular. After checking out pianists like Waller, Wilson, Hines, and Monk, I've realised that I need a lot more listening to do and that Tatum stands out in his own unique way as having crystallised his own mode of expression. Not that he's the only genius out there of course (even if he's one of the most) (apologies for my lengthy writing lol).

I agree, Tatum was an amazing technician with extraordinary control over instrument. As you say Earl Hines had this natural infectious swing, plus there was always a great deal of invention along the way. As much as I am in awe of Tatum's amazing keyboard feats, in my opinion he often filled numbers with far too many notes, even some of his slower ballad playing became over embellished on occasions. I have to say though he was a fantastic blues player.

For my money ( and I’ll admit, I’m no Ultimate Expert!), Art Tatum and Earl “Fathah ” Hines sure do belong in the Top 5 of all-time Jazz Greatests— but let’s also, please, not forget Erroll Gardner for sheer, exuberant invention and technical prowess - and the great Oscar Peterson for jaw-dropping mastery. ❤

Remember that Hines comes well before Tatum in time. I think the jump between Hines and other piano players of the mid 1920s is greater than that between Tatum and his contemporaries.

Jelly Roll Morton developed ragtime piano playing into what one might call a first glimpse of piano jazz. Earl Hines INVENTED piano jazz. Just compare his 20ies records with Louis Armstrong to what pianists played before him.

I'm 41. You? I've never heard any of the musicians you've mentioned. Thx for the heads up. I was raised on Jazz. My step-dad was a phenomenal sax, clarinet & flute player & a full time, working musician. In the early 80's musicians were constantly coming/going from our house. Many jam sessions took place. Dad toured w/Sam Butera's band (Louis Prima's sax player) in the early 80's. I love Jazz, but mostly I know only the big name/popular musicians. BTW I also play piano, well "keyboards" mostly.

I think it's because his main influence was on the great pianists of the 30s and early 40s, like Teddie Wilson and Art Tatum (who considered Hines his favorite pianist). Also, even though his big band in the early 40s was a major player in the transition from swing to bop (its lineup included Bird, Diz, and Sarah Vaughan), the muscians' strike of '42-44 (and the resultant ban on studio recordings) meant that future generations would never have a chance to hear what it sounded like.

@BuckshotLaFunke1 I wish more jazz pianists would take Morton as a pianist more seriously. So many jazz people dismiss him because he was not a virtuosic pianists like James P. or Fats. I fell many people who try to play his compositions don't really get them. Although he influenced other pianists (such as Hines) Morton's importance is his contribution to the jazz piano literature and to the form of jazz.

I don't think there is any problem with taking him "seriously". Morton is disliked by many, including myself, for the same reason I profoundly dislike Jarrett for example. He was a honest, reasonably good pianist who could bring joy and happiness to his audience, but his grandiose ego and arrogance was waaaay out of proportion. On one hand he claimed to have 'invented" jazz, to be the King of the piano etc., and at the same time he avoided New York out of fear to be compared unfavourably to James P. Johnson. On the other hand, someone like Fats, himself one of the four of five absolutely best pianists of his era, was always ecstatic and full of admiration for the very few who were considered even "better" (mainly Tatum, Hines, Johnson). Hines, classically trained and with a technical virtuosity that only Tatum could rival, said that he went to cutting contest parties not to compete with other pianists but to listen to them. That kind of attitude created much more respect and endeared them to the public and fellow musicians infinitely more than Morton or Jarrett playing Mr. Primadona.

Depends. I really love both. Technically Hines can be every bit as overwhelming as Tatum when he wants to (1:13 onwards gives just a little glimpse of his powers) but he didn't make it his defining trait. On the other hand Tatum was and remains unmatched in his ability to take a tune that everyone knows to death and play it in a way that makes you feel like you never heard it before, and yet simultaneously seems so perfectly natural and obvious.

@@jacobzimmermann59 Personally I feel that only Oscar Peterson could match Tatum in sheer virtuosity - but I feel that there are other classically trained jazz players, for instance Dick Hyman, Keith Jarrett, or even Hiromi Uehara who might come close. But virtuosity is only one aspect of great music, it's one form of expression and it is not necessarily a superior of expression to, for example, sensuality of style (which Hines had more than Tatum). They're all unique players in their own right.

Also, let's not confuse virtuosity with technique - virtuosity requires great technique, but on the other hand, it's absolutely commonplace for a technically proficient performance to not be "virtuosic" in character.

Hines himself and everyone after him played Rosetta in virtually every style imaginable but although this one is of course outstanding, my favourite is perhaps still Erroll Garner's pure Stride version.

Have you heard the version that Hines recorded with Johnny Hodges on the album "Stride Right" ?...Great! It was recorded much later in Hines' career (1966) than this version (1939) and is quite different in feel.

@@callmejeffbob Thanks for the tip, I didn't know that one. You will probably disagree but I'm less fond of it; to me it feels as if Hines fell into the "Tatum trap" here. He's getting so obsessed with virtuosity and speed in that solo that he seems to be losing that visceral swing that Waller and Garner mastered so perfectly. It still swings beautifully of course, but it's all thanks to the rhythm section.
