I'll Be Seeing You
Françoise Hardy Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I'll be seeing you in all the old familiar places
That this heart of mine embraces all day through
In that small cafe, the park across the way
The children's carousel,
The chestnut trees, the wishing well

I'll be seeing you in every lovely summer's day
In everything that's light and gay
I'll always think of you that way

I'll find you in the morning' sun
And when the night is new
I'll be looking at the moon
But I'll be seeing you
I'll find you in the morning sun
And when the night is new

I'll be looking at the moon
But I'll be seeing you

Overall Meaning

Françoise Hardy's "I'll Be Seeing You" is a song about the power of memories and how they can live on even when a person is physically absent. The singer speaks to someone who is no longer in their life, but they know they will continue to see them in their mind's eye. The lyrics describe specific places where the singer will conjure up the image of the person they miss, such as a small café, a park, a children's carousel, and more. They also remark on the fact that they will see the person in everything that's light and gay, meaning they will see them in moments of happiness and joy that evoke memories of their time together.

The lyrics also describe the way in which the singer will see the person they miss - in the morning sun, when the night is new, and even when looking at the moon. These are all reminders of how the memories of the person they miss will persist regardless of the passage of time or changes in their physical surroundings.

Overall, "I'll Be Seeing You" is a poignant and heartfelt ode to the power of memories and how they can be a comfort even when a loved one is gone.

I'll be seeing you
In all the old familiar places
That this heart of mine embraces
All day through.

In that small cafe;
The park across the way;
The children's carosel;
The chestnut trees;
The wishin' well.

I'll be seeing you
In every lovely summer's day;
In every thing that's light and gay.
I'll always think of you that way.

I'll find you
In the morning sun
And when the night is new.
I'll be looking at the moon,
But I'll be seeing you.

I'll be seeing you
In every lovely summer's day;
In every thing that's light and gay.
I'll always think of you that way.

I'll find you
In the morning sun
And when the night is new.
I'll be looking at the moon,
But I'll be seeing you.

the roughness of Iggy Pop's voice is an excellent complement to the beauty and sweetness of Francoise Hardy's voice, n'est-ce pas?

Back in the early 70s, I'd sometimes stop at the Denny's restaurant on Sunset Blvd. in Hollywood after a long night at the recording studio. Often, there would be Iggy with his retinue of friends & hangers on. Once he worked at our studio with David Bowie producing. I was the guy they had help them set up & take care of any problems. A problem they had turned into a special effect on the recording. Interesting times they were. peace royeh
