Hardy signed her first contract with the record label Vogue in November 1961. In April 1962, shortly after finishing school, her first album, "Oh oh Chéri", appeared, with the title song written by Johnny Hallyday's writing duo. The flip side of the record, "Tous les garçons et les filles" became a huge success, which sold 2 million copies. She had long hair and usually wore jeans with a leather jacket, while accompanying her songs on the guitar.
She sang in English, Spanish, and German occasionally. In 1963, she represented Monaco in the Grand Prix d'Eurovision de la Chanson with "L'amour s'en va" and emerged in fifth place. In 1968, she received the Grand Prix du Disque Académie Charles Cros.
In 1981, she married her long-time companion Jacques Dutronc, with whom she had already had a son (Thomas Dutronc) in 1973. In May 2000, she had a comeback with the album "Clair Obscur". Her son played the guitar, and her husband sang the duet "Puisque vous partez en voyage". Iggy Pop and Etienne Daho participated, as well. She currently lives near Paris.
In 2006 she released a new duets album entitled "Parenthèses" which included a song with her son Thomas.
In 2021, Hardy announced that her health had worsened and that she would not be able to sing again owing to the effects of cancer therapy.
Celui Que Tu Veux

Celui que tu veux
Savais-tu que je suis
Celui que tu veux
Je me languis
Serai-je un jour un amant?
Et celui qui
La belle fredonne
Et prépare ses appâts
Le cœur pardonne
Mais la tête n'oublie pas
Ça fait déjà longtemps
Tous les jours j'apprends
À patienter
Es-tu une cible
Un peu impossible?
Savais-tu que je suis
Celui que tu veux
Savais-tu que je suis
Celui que tu veux
J'ai des secrets
Et quelqu'un à qui les dire
Sans le faire exprès
Je t'ai vue resplendir
Le miel et le lait
Coulent
Et nous appartiennent
Et cette parole est
Une vérité ancienne
Ça fait déjà longtemps
Tous les jours j'apprends
À espérer
Es-tu une cible
Un peu impossible?
Savais-tu que je suis
Celui que tu veux
Savais-tu que je suis
Celui que tu veux
In "Celui que tu veux," Françoise Hardy sings about her longing for someone she desires, but who may not be completely attainable. The lyrics are simple, yet convey a depth of emotion through the repetition of the phrase, "Savais-tu que je suis celui que tu veux" (Did you know that I am the one you want). Hardy expresses a mixture of hope, doubt, and patience as she waits for the person she desires to notice her and choose her.
The first verse sets the theme of the song, and Hardy repeats the lines "Savais-tu que je suis celui que tu veux" throughout the song, almost as if she is trying to convince the person she desires of her worth. She expresses her desire to be an "amant" (lover) and wonders if she will ever be chosen as such. The second verse brings in a third party, "la belle" (the beauty), who is also vying for the attention of the person Hardy desires. Despite this competition, Hardy's heart may forgive, but her head does not forget. The final verse expresses the hope and patience she has, as she repeats her desire to be noticed and chosen.
Overall, "Celui que tu veux" is a simple yet powerful song about unrequited love and the patience required when waiting for someone we desire. Through her repetition of the phrase "Savais-tu que je suis celui que tu veux" and her mixture of hope and doubt, Françoise Hardy captures the emotions of many who have experienced similar feelings.
