Jean-Michel Rotin est l’un des plus ingénieux artistes de zouk, et est d’ailleurs un des créateurs du Zouk RnB (mélange de zouk lov et de Rnb), style très prisé des artistes de la nouvelle génaration tels que Kaysha, Nichols et d’autres… Jean-Michel Rotin dit « JMR » ou « 69 » (parce qu’il est né en 1969) a commencé à se faire connaître du public avec le groupe ENERGY et le tube « Paket Moun » en 1989.
Il enchaîne ensuite avec « Lè ou lov », son plus grand succès, mais également « Cherylane » et « Séñorita Dieze ». Cette série de tubes le propulse immédiatement au rang de grand espoir du zouk.
Le deuxième album du groupe est donc déjà très attendu, et Jean-Michel Rotin constitue à lui seul une véritable attraction.
Cet album sera aussi son dernier album au sein de Energy. Il apparaît différent, relooké avec les cheveux défrisé et un son novateur particulièrement aprécié du jeune public. L’album est un succès avec des chansons comme « Sof vou », le méga tube « Adié en nou » ou encore « San vou ».
1994 est certainement sa plus belle année jusqu’à aujourd’hui : l’album « Héros » est une grande réussite, avec 9 titres recherchés tant musicalement qu’au niveau des textes. Il se vend à plus de 75000 exemplaires, ce qui est un excellent chiffre pour un album de zouk, (sachant aussi qu’un disque d’or est atteint pour 100 000 exemplaires vendus). Plus de la moitié des morceaux sont des tubes: « Héros », « Un Homme », « Cigaret », « Ella », « Sé Baw » ou encore « My Love ».
Deux ans plustard en 1996, Jean Michel Rotin se lance dans la production sous le label « Stuff Records ». Il sort son deuxième album solo, justement intitulé « Solo ». Le son et les textes sont moins riches que dans ses précédentes apparitions. Le disque est néanmoins un bon album qui lance par ailleurs le fameux Zouk RnB tel qu’on le connaît aujourd’hui avec le tube « Mwen ni to » interprété par Marie-loo Coopen et Jennifer Visenjoux. C’est aussi sur cet album qu’on découvre Kaysha, une des futures stars du Zouk Rnb. Après l’album « Solo », Jean-Michel Rotin sera demandé par de nombreux artistes pour ses talents de compositeur. Tanya Saint-Val, Sonia Dersion et bien d’autres… Il participe également à deux albums du groupe JM Harmony et prouve encore une fois sa grande créativité sur des morceaux tels que « Adan péyi a bondié » et « And I Love her » tous deux de vrais tubes des étés 97 et 98.
En 1998, Rotin sort l’album « PREVIEW » avec un sous-titre énigmatique « Zouk Is dead? » (Le zouk est-il mort?), une question que beaucoup se posent à l’époque tant le zouk manque de créativité et d’inventivité pour se renouveller. Le son de cet album se rapproche d’ailleurs plus du rnb et du rap que du zouk proprement dit.
2002, Rotin effectue des séjours à New York, en Guyane, en Guadeloupe et à Paris pour la préparation de son 3eme album solo qui devrait être intitulé « Nation ». La sortie est prévue sous peu (fin de l’été 2002?). Espérons en tout cas que le très talentueux Jean-Michel « JMR » « 69 » Rotin nous fera passer de bons moments, après presque 5 années d’absence.

Ma favorite de tout son répertoire connu. J'adore ce son... JMR est certainement le chanteur Zouk le plus talentueux de sa génération. Malheureusement sa carrière n'est pas à la hauteur de son génie musical.
