He released his first albums under the Jovanotti byname to later switch into his real name (Lorenzo), as of the mid-nineties.
Most of his output is hip-hop influenced, although not most of his work should be viewed as hip hop music per se. Many of his songs are not hip hop related and may probably be best viewed as part of the earlier Italian cantautore tradition. Some of his earlier work is also closer to keyboard-heavy 1980s pop. Most of his songs are sung in the Italian language; he also released a Spanish-language greatest hits album. His live album includes a short version of the Sugarhill Gang's "Rapper's Delight". Jovanotti appears on several international compilations, most notably Red Hot + Rhapsody, a 1998 tribute to George Gershwin, on which he performed "I Got Rhythm". Jovanotti has also appeared in one Luciano Pavarotti's charity concert in 1996.
His CD, Buon Sangue, includes influences from both rock and old school hip hop. It is one of his most innovative works to date. Edoardo Bennato collaborated on one track, while bass player Saturnino co-wrote two of the songs.
One of his most recent CDs, "Ora", breaks new ground with a new style of production.

E come sempre vorrei star zitto
In questa casa di proprietà
mi sento sempre in affitto
Ci sono cose che dovrei fare
E dalle quali gli sto alla larga
Passano spesso molte occasioni
Mi limito a leggerne la targa
C'è qualcosa che non va
In questo cuore
In questo cuore qua
Qualcosa che non va, ohoh
Forse sarà l'età
O forse sarà la voglia di libertà
La voglia di libertà
Mi sono preso un giubbotto nuovo
Per l'inverno che sta per iniziare
E devo andare dall'ottico
A ritirare le foto del mare
Tra un giorno è mezzo è il mio compleanno
Centosettesimo da quando sono nato
Ed è costume che il compleanno
Venga festeggiato
C'è qualcosa che non va
In questo cuore
In questo cuore qua
Qualcosa che non va, ohoh
Forse sarà l'età
O forse sarà la voglia di libertà
La voglia di libertà
La voglia di libertà
La voglia di libertà
La voglia di libertà
La voglia di libertà
C'è qualcosa che non va
In questo cuore
In questo cuore qua
Qualcosa che non va, ohoh
O forse sarà l'età
O forse sarà la voglia di libertà
La voglia di libertà
La voglia di libertà
La voglia di libertà
La voglia di libertà
La voglia di libertà
La voglia di libertà
La voglia di libertà
La voglia di libertà
La voglia di libertà
In Jovanotti's song "La voglia di libertà" (The Desire for Freedom), the artist sings about his restlessness and longing for freedom. The first stanza describes how he feels like he is always in someone else's space, even in his own home. He admits that there are things he should be doing but he avoids them, and watches opportunities pass him by. He acknowledges that something isn't right in his heart, and he wonders if it's because of his age or a desire for freedom. He repeats the phrase "la voglia di libertà" throughout the song, emphasizing his longing for freedom.
In the second stanza, Jovanotti mentions getting a new jacket for the upcoming winter and needing to pick up photographs from the optometrist. He also notes that his birthday is coming up and that it's customary to celebrate. Despite these mundane tasks, he can't shake the feeling that something is off in his heart. He again wonders if it's because of his age or desire for freedom.
The theme of restlessness and longing for freedom is universal and relatable. Jovanotti's message speaks to the human desire to break free from the confines of routine and the search for something new. The repetition of "la voglia di libertà" emphasizes this longing, and the simplicity of the lyrics allows the listener to easily connect with the song's message.
