She released her first, self-produced solo album, Kamien (Stone), in 1996. It was a great success, consisting of melancholy pop songs. In the same year, she was voted ‘Vocalist of the Year’ by the Polish music industry and received a Fryderyk in recognition of her achievements.
In 1997, she received another Fryderyk, this time for the album Zebra, in the category of ‘Composer of the Year’. With Zebra she changed her style, moving in the direction of American soul music.
In 1999, she recorded one of the most popular Polish albums ever, with the Balkan composer Goran Bregović, entitled Kayah & Bregović: it is a blend of old Slavic songs and modern rhythms. Most of the music was composed by Bregović for the band Bijelo Dugme (White Button), which he had been a part of and movie soundtracks that he had worked on. The lyrics are both translations of the original text and inspired. In the same year she was awarded a Wiktor and another Fryderyk, in the category ‘Vocalist of the Year’.
In 2000, she released the album Jaka Ja Kayah which featured pop, jazz, and techno-influenced songs. She also released the single "Aniol Wiedzial" ("The Angel Knew") from the album, duetted with Cesaria Evora in Portuguese, and recorded English-language versions of some of her songs.
She was twice cast in advertisements for Polish mobile phone's Web - Orange POP (formerly Idea POP).

Empesi azer l'amor
Kon un mansevo brigante
Ke me pudo arrevatar
Kon un mansevo brigante
De edad de kinze anyos
Empesi azer l'amor
De edad de kinze anyos
Empesi azer l'amor
Kon un mansevo brigante
Ke me pudo arrevatar
Kon un mansevo brigante
Ke me pudo arrevatar
El ofisio de mi kerido
Es ladrón i kumardji
El ofisio de mi kerido
Es ladrón i kumardji
El Tavan ke me lo guadre
De la mano de pulis
El Tavan ke me lo guadre
De la mano de pulis
Trenta liras me demanda
Trent i una le vo dar
Trenta liras me demanda
Trent i una le vo dar
Ke las meta en ofisio
En ofisio de ganar
Ke las meta en ofisio
En ofisio de ganar
The lyrics of Kayah's song De Edad De Kinze Anyos revolve around a young girl who falls in love at the age of fifteen with a young brigand who manages to steal her heart. The opening line 'De edad de kinze anyos' which translates to 'At the age of fifteen,' reveals the age of the singer and how at such a young age, she begins to explore the world of love. She describes the young brigand who stole her heart as 'mansevo' which means young and inexperienced, suggesting that he is not an experienced thief like other criminals.
The second verse talks about the brigand's profession, which is a thief and a wanderer (kumardji). The girl admits to being in love with a thief and wraps him up in romanticism as she describes how his profession is stealing, but it is what she loves about him. However, the love affair is not without its consequence, and the young couple finds themselves in the hands of the police. The girl pleads, requesting to save her love interest from the police's clutches and assuring that she would pay the ransom.
In summary, the lyrics of the song De Edad De Kinze Anyos are about a young girl's infatuation with a young, inexperienced brigand who manages to steal her heart at the young age of fifteen. She describes her love interest's profession as a thief and a wanderer and how she is ready to pay the ransom to save him from the police.

Żałuję ogromnie, że w wersji albumowej pominięta jest solówka Patrycji Napierały. Na koncertach daje czadu!
