The group itself is composed of musicians Mourad Musset, Olivier Leite and Florent Vintrigner, all of them coming from the Théâtre du fil in Paris, France. At First, La Rue Kétanou was playing in the streets of la Rochelle and the île de Ré. The show was a mix between theater and music. Their motto was "C'est pas nous qui sommes à la rue, c'est la rue Kétanou", meaning "We don't belong to the street, the street belongs to us"
After spending some time living a semi bohemian life, the group ended up meeting Bibou, a member of Tryo, who asked them to be the opening act for the Tryo shows at L'Olympia and for the rest of their tour.
The first album of La Rue Kétanou, En attendant les caravanes (Waiting for the caravans) was finally produced in 2001. After some time doing tours throughout France, the group completed a second album Y'a des cigales dans la fourmilière (Cicadas in the ant-hill) in 2002. In 2004, they released a live album Ouvert à double tour. However, after this album, there were rumours that they were about to break up. Fortunately, these rumours ended up being untrue. Florent, however, spent some time in a related project, the group T'inquiète Lazare. Mourad and Olivier also formed a new band with several other musicians and friends, Mon côté punk.
After this pause, the group is touring again with two new members, Pierre Joseph and Simoné Monticelloni.

In La Rue Kétanou's song "Les Maisons", the singer is sitting at a bar, contemplating the people and things around him. He sees a variety of people with different lifestyles, including those that are not necessarily happy, married or industrious. He observes the houses that people seem to never finish building or settle into, and compares them to the unfinished boats that never leave the harbour. He remarks on the messengers of God who do not welcome those who don't fit in or have different beliefs. The singer then speaks of how he carves stone with his bare hands putting his childlike mind into it all. He reminisces about his dreams of being an actor and falling in love. The song ends with a resolution to move forward despite the unfinished, static things around.
The lyrics are an introspective exploration of life's missed opportunities and choices. The song suggests, lightly and poetically, that through the stagnation and unfinished businesses of life, there is potential beyond those woes. The houses, boats, and even the postes de television left unused, show that the people in the song are stuck in their lives; however, there is hope even in desolation. The singer decides to keep going despite all these things, and this optimistic message is the song's final takeaway.

I am in a state of inebriation and reflection
I continually revisit my dreams
And then I pause...and I observe
Tellement de gens différents,
There are so many different people,
Des pas marrants aux pas mariés,
From the unfunny to the married,
Aux marins qui n’aiment pas ramer
To sailors who don't enjoy rowing,
And these houses that we never finish
And these houses that we move into without finishing
Televisions that serve me no purpose
So that I may meet you, for you to talk to him,
Lui pose la bonne question
To ask him the right question
Which he is afraid to hear the answer to
Et ces bateaux qui ne partent pas
And these boats that never leave
Houses that we imagine and don't like
Une fois terminée alors, Hop ! On s'en va
Once finished, we'll just leave
Les ruines qui restent là
The ruins that remain there
Rotting next to our childish heads
And these guns that never stop firing
And these messengers of God who do not accept us
Parce qu'on n'est pas comme ça
Because we are not like that
Ou qu'on n'a pas le même baptême
Because we do not have the same baptism
Because we do not win the same battles
And I carve the stone with my bare hands
Amidst all of this, with the mind of a child
And my dreams of being an actor in your cinema
Where my role would be to be in love with you
Where my arms will embrace paradise
Que font tes : 'Je t'aime', que sont tes : 'Je t'aime'
What do your 'I love you's' mean
Eh ben tant pis pour eux, on y va
Well, too bad for them, we'll go on anyway
My head resting on a bottle of water...
Je remonte à tes bras
I return to your arms
