Waiting For The Ghost Train
Madness Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

A straw headed woman, and a barrel chested man
A pocket full of posies with a hat brim full of sand
(Ooh ooh) waiting for the train that never comes

A dog chasing the tumbleweeds, across the sandy floor
That drift along the platform, through the ticket office door
(Ooh ooh) waiting for the train that never comes
(Ooh ooh ooh ooh) waiting for the train that never comes

But don't tell me there's nothing coming, you don't fool me
I hear the ghost train rumbling along the tracks - set them free
And I hear them
It's black and white, don't try to hide [x2]

The station master's writing with a piece of orange chalk
A hundred cancellations, still no one wants to walk
Keep the hungry children from the skeleton in the back
Paid to keep an eye out for the Gypsy caravan
(Ooh ooh) waiting for the train that never comes
(Ooh ooh ooh ooh) waiting for the train that never comes

I hear the ghost train rumbling along the tracks - set them free
And I hear them
It's black and white, don't try to hide [x4]
It's black and white (don't try) [x2]
It's black and white, don't try to hide [x2]

And I hear them
It's black and white, don't try to hide [x2]

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of "Waiting For The Ghost Train" by Madness describe a bleak and desolate scene in a train station where people are waiting for a train that never comes. The song describes a "straw headed woman" and a "barrel chested man" waiting with a "pocket full of posies" and a "hat brim full of sand," while a dog chases tumbleweeds across the platform.

The song's chorus is about the ghost train, which the singer insists must be coming despite the lack of visible evidence. The station master is writing cancellations on the platform with a piece of orange chalk, and a skeleton in the back reminds us of the hunger and poverty that permeate the scene. Throughout the song, the lyrics suggest a sense of isolation and abandonment that is characteristic of many of Madness's darker songs.

Such an underrated song. One of my favourites

Such a sad time. We knew this was Madness's last song before they split. I really didn't know which group to follow after years of being a Nutty Boys fan. Then some of the band came back as The Madness & that album was totally awesome. ❤️❤️

@raysmith7251

Beat The Bride ..my fave on that!!..

@philnewton-england7795

@gobbledegook21

That was such an underated album, and some great songs such as In wonder, Nail down th days & Nightmare nightmare

@vandamparmo7959

When they broke up it was losing part of the family but they've come back stronger and better with old age😁

@user-rq7gz5su3f

Couldn't listen to this song for decades as it reminded me of when they split. I was devastated. I mean really devastated. How can people who don't even know I exist have such an impact on our lives? Long live Madness.

@TONYCOV881

They took it as far as they could go after Mike Barson left the band their songs were good but not as strong as they were, they were great for their time we always love them for it.

@bowser515

Madness really are timeless. And this is one of my favourites from them. Love it...

@pp37903

This was always a favourite of mine. I saw them live last night for the first time - they absolutely blew me away, but very little from this era made the set - it was dominated by very early stuff.
