The band was formed from the fusion of 2 smallers bands, the Hot Pants and the Casse-pieds.
Mano Negra mixed a number of styles: straight rock (with a lead guitar), latin music (with a brass section), punk (influenced by The Clash). Their songs often mixed French, Spanish and English lyrics.

Former band member Tom Darnal was one of the founders of the band P18
About name
La Mano Negra ("The Black Hand") was a supposed anarchist organization in Andalucía, Spain, accused of many terrorist acts. Although, in latter studies, its existence was found unlikely and was probably an excuse used by the government under Sagasta to oppress anarchist activity in southern Spain.

The song Sidi'h'bibi by Mano Negra is a tribute to Sidi h'bibi, a legendary figure in Moroccan folklore. The first few lines of the song translate to "Oh my lord Sidi h'bibi, where are you? Sidi h'bibi is gone, he's not here. He didn't carry me away, he didn't capture me." These lines reference the belief that Sidi h'bibi was a powerful and mysterious figure who would capture and whisk away maidens who caught his eye.
The lyrics of the song also suggest that the singer is sick and suffering because Sidi h'bibi has not come to heal him. "I'm sick, I'm sick, until I die," the singer sings. "Come to me, come to me, come to me now." It is believed that Sidi h'bibi had the ability to heal people and the singer is calling out to him for help.

Ven a verme, trae tu gracia
Cariño mio ¿donde estas?
estás ahí cariño, estoy cautivado
Es él, el que me hace sufrir, Él está allá, y está aquí
Cariño ¿por que te has olvidado de mi?
