I've been a fan of S&G for nearly 50 years and I just realized today that the tempo changes and the snare drum in this song mimic the sound of a locomotive speeding up and slowing down as it moves from town to town. How did I never catch that before?

It's details like that which make songs like this truly timeless--even after half a century of listening, I'm still finding new reasons to love this song...

This was the most played song on the jukebox at the officer's club, 355 Tac Fighter wing,Takhli Royal Thai Air Force Base, Thailand during the Vietnam War. All of our missions were flown to Hanoi and the rest of North Vietnam. On these missions, we lost over 335 of our F-105s. God bless those Heroes that didn't come home!

Many a serviceman listened to this song in times past. This was music of my youth and my military career was much later than the Vietnam vets. However, I listened to this after spending 14 months in Bosnia and anticipating seeing my wife and children as I climbed on a C-130 headed to Germany. Funny how music makes indelible marks on our lives and brings back memories in vibrant color.

This song reminds me of my dad in the car on the way to the next Air Force Base and 😢he'd get on a plane and fly to Vietnam , he used to tell us keep listening to this song and I'll be home soon ❤️. To this day I still listen to it today it gives me peaceful reminders. Simon and Garfunkel are great musicians even to this day. You can feel their music through your heart and to me that's the way music should be.

My Mom loved Simon & Garfunkel. I grew up listening to them all the time. When Mom became sick in the hospital the nurse told me I better call my Dad (We lived about 15 minutes away) to get him there. My brother and I stood there in the hospital room waiting for my Dad and this song came on, gently playing across the speakers as my Mom passed away. I'll never forget that... My Dad arrived about ten minutes after, and I have lived with the guilt that I should have called him sooner.

This is , by far, my favorite S&G song. It resonates very deeply. Their other songs feel dated to me but this never will. I loved it right out of the gate. Yes, it is a bit Schmaltzy but not too schmalty. I love it. Gordon Lightfoot's, 'If You Could Read My Mind' has a similar impact

I listen to this now after 22 years on a career journey that was ok and happy many times but has ended ultimately in failure. Looking to rebuild now by getting back closer to family and new work. I find most old friends from home are both familiar yet strangers, too. I tried the Billy Joel “Our Italian Restaurant” approach but it won’t work. As Thomas Wolfe said, you can’t go home again. You pack up your suitcase and move along, you come home when you can. You hold the memories and look for tomorrow where you can.
