All I Know
Simon & Garfunkel Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I bruise you
You bruise me
We both bruise too easily
Too easily to let it show
I love you and that's all I know

All my plans
Have fallen through
All my plans depend on you
Depend on you to help them grow
I love you and that's all I know

When the singer's gone
Let the song go on

But the ending always comes at last
Endings always come too fast
They come too fast
But they pass too slow
I love you and that's all I know

When the singer's gone
Let the song go on
It's a fine line between the darkness and the dawn
They say in the darkest night, there's a light beyond

But the ending always comes at last
Endings always come too fast
They come too fast
But they pass too slow
I love you and that's all I know

That's all I know
That's all I know

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Simon & Garfunkel's song "All I Know" capture the essence of a profound and simple love. The repeated phrase "I love you and that's all I know" emphasizes that love is the only certainty in the singer's life. The opening lines, "I bruise you, you bruise me, we both bruise too easily," suggest an intimate relationship where both parties are vulnerable to emotional pain. Despite this vulnerability, they choose to embrace love rather than let their bruises show. The lyrics convey a sense of surrender and acceptance; the singer acknowledges that all their plans have fallen through and now depend on the other person to help them grow. Love becomes their anchor amidst the uncertainty and disappointments of life.

The chorus, "When the singer's gone, let the song go on," suggests that even when the singer's voice or presence fades away, their love should endure. The idea of endings coming too fast and passing too slow reflects the bittersweet nature of relationships. Endings are inevitable, but they often linger, leaving a lasting impact. The lyrics imply that while love may not provide all the answers or solutions, it is enough to sustain them through life's ups and downs.

Overall, "All I Know" is a tender and introspective song about embracing love as the only certainty in an unpredictable world. It explores themes of vulnerability, reliance, and the fleeting nature of time, ultimately reminding listeners that, despite life's challenges, love is a guiding force.

God bless you and your beautiful wife sir. May you find comfort and joy with all your beautiful memories of you and your wife and the days that you both shared. Life is fleeting in the scheme of things and it can end in the b!ink of an eye. I witnessed a miracle back in 1979. I was very young and my aunt Joan was dying of cancer and I witnessed her take her last breath. There was a peaceful feeling that captured me and I could not take my eyes off of my aunt. As soon as she took her last breath I saw a white mist rise from her and rose up to the ceiling and dissapated. Rest assure that you will join your wife in heaven when its time.
