Formed in 1990, the group's line-up includes vocalist Maynard James Keenan, guitarist Adam Jones and drummer Danny Carey. Justin Chancellor has been the band's bassist since 1995, replacing their original bassist Paul D'Amour. Tool has won four Grammy Awards, performed worldwide tours, and produced albums topping the charts in several countries.

To date, the band has released five studio albums, one EP and one box set. They emerged with a heavy metal sound on their first studio album, Undertow (1993), and became a dominant act in the alternative metal movement with the release of their follow-up album Ænima in 1996. Their efforts to unify musical experimentation, visual arts, and a message of personal evolution continued with Lateralus (2001) and 10,000 Days (2006), gaining critical acclaim and international commercial success. Their fifth studio album, Fear Inoculum, was released on August 30, 2019, to widespread critical acclaim. Prior to its release, the band had sold more than 13 million albums in the US alone.

Due to Tool's incorporation of visual arts and very long and complex releases, the band is generally described as a style-transcending act and part of progressive rock, psychedelic rock, and art rock. The relationship between the band and today's music industry is ambivalent, at times marked by censorship, and the band's insistence on privacy.

There is a raging debate about whether Tool can be considered "post-metal" or not. However, they surely had a hand in its creation as much as Neurosis. The influential act Isis was heavily influenced by Tool's music, so much that they lifted entire basslines and guitar riffing from Tool and even their iconic snare sound was inspired by Tool's style. Much has been made of both Isis and Tool's sound and influence across the years but one thing is sure, modern post-metal has their fingerprints everywhere and it would not have sounded this way without them. Additionally, Tool actually was aware of and liked Isis' music as they chose Isis as touring partners, a move that brought even more attention to Isis' music.

English isnt my native language. I read about the story behind the song. And I always thought it was some kind of blaming "god" or the believe in it (since tool is known as an atheistic group and Maynard anti god opinion comes from the fact that his mother was hard religious, even when she suffered in the life on earth) but when I read your comment I looked far more into the lyrics. And the song is a homage to his mother clearly. And it shows that he doesn't have to believe in the same things as his mother, to accept and love and miss her.

I don't really listen to this song for the lyrics but for the way Maynard sings them. Crooning, mumbling, accusing, demanding, declaring, comforting, assuring. It's a personal send-up to his mother. His contempt for religion is still present, but he plays it as an appeal for his mother. “If God exists then she is more deserving of heaven than any of us.” Even if you don't know the backstory, you know there is something he is putting his whole self into--it's important to him, and so as a listener it becomes important to me.

I get the same vibe from this. Different from Judith you can tell there’s more respect for her religious views while creating a song she would be proud of. Ultimately most do want to make our parents proud. With my mom passing recently Ive listened to this song in a different way. My husband passed away yesterday in hospice, he was 32. I played him this song before he received the Sacrament of the Sick from the Chaplain there the day before he passed.
This song was really fitting because he had anoxic brain injury and multiple organ failure and fought for his consciousness and body for 40+ days in the ICU. Not exactly a stroke like Maynard's mom, but I believe this song brought us both peace.

When Maynard sings “daylight dims leaving cold fluorescence; difficult to see you in this light” I immediately picture him in the hospital room as his mother is taking her last breaths. Back in ‘06 I was driving from Salt Lake back to Bozeman and was listening to this entire song and I can almost for certain tell you that I must have had a very similar experience to Maynard. It was around 5 and All I could see was the lyric
“Daylight dims leaving cold fluorescence’
It’s EXACTLY what I was experiencing I actually pulled off the highway drove up some hill and literally watched this ‘daylight dimming’ I was so moved by the situation that I’ve never forgotten it.
But for sure the way northern Utah is with all those factories and the toxic smoke literally does something to that light in the winter evening sunset..

This is genuinely the most amazing piece of music I've ever heard in my entire life. The emotions that this song brings out is just unbelievable, and the lyricism is just incredible beyond belief. This is the only song I tear up every single time I hear it, but I can't stop listening. This is the closest thing to perfection in my opinion. The way you can just picture every lyric in this song... it's amazing. Truly incredible that this could even be imagined, let alone created in to a work of art. My mom's middle name was Marie also. She died from cancer exactly two months before her grandson/my son was born. The nurses and doctors said they did not know how she lived so long. She was diagnosed with a rare form of cancer called multiple myeloma that usually affects African American males. She was a Caucasian female. My grandmother just passed away some days ago, she was the most caring and loving mother I could ever have, at her 96 years she wouldn't let go a day without asking us if we have already eaten or if we were heading out asked us to take a jacket. He's talking about himself as a non believer for so many years and his anger towards the church, people of faith, God, etc. and how Judith was HIS OWN burden of proof that because she was so faithful for so long, and because she was "the light and the way they only read about" (her congregation)... because she held so fast to her faith for so long that there must be a God.

But yea... chills EVERY SINGLE TIME at this part and for the entire song really.

Yea its just one guy's interpretation but this whole song felt to me almost like an apology to his mom and perhaps even to God for the bitterness he held for so many years... for making songs like Judith with Perfect Circle. I won't even listen to that song. Its too dark and too violent for me. So much hate poured out in that one.

Thats way wings 1 & 2 are literally my fav Tool songs ever. And they've been my favorite band hands down since 1993 when I was like 15. I've struggled for years with how amazing their music is and at the same time knowing that a lot of their stuff has roots in "belive in nothing"... that sort of thing. A lot of the stuff from Lateralus forward shows a lot of intellectual and spiritual growth. Especially songs like this one. Helps me rationalize it I guess. Again though... just one guy's interpretation.

The fact that she didn't waver despite the what happened to her is a testament. And Maynard went through his own trials of abuse. It's understandable.

"Wings for Marie" and "10,000 Days" show the relationship that Maynard had with his mother and how he views her. It's heart breaking as you don't just hear the greif in Maynards voice, *you feel it as if you yourself were in Maynards shoes*.

I used to listen to this song with crappy headphones, all the time, barely feeling anything. The second I got my friends over the ear headphones, I played this song at full blast, and I legitimately started crying in the middle of a silent classroom.

Today I have lost my dad.
He struggled for 10+ years with a paralyzing neurodegenerative disease (ALS). I was listening to Wings pt.1 + 2 when he passed away this morning.
I've always been close to him, all these years.

He wasn't a believer, but if there's a heaven, he can shake his fists at the gates shouting "I've come home now!" he truly deserves heaven.

Something no one ever talks about with this song is the storm that's building in the background. We've all heard a thunderstorm off the distance before, likewise we've had one right on top of us too. The way the thunder changes, the rainfall comes in, I can close my eyes and see the lightning, shits powerful.
