What Are We Waiting On?
Woody Guthrie Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

There's a great and a bloody fight 'round this whole world tonight
And the battle, the bombs and shrapnel reign
Hitler told the world around he would tear our union down
But our union's gonna break them slavery chains
Our union's gonna break them slavery chains

I walked up on a mountain in the middle of the sky
Could see every farm and every town
I could see all the people in this whole wide world
That's the union that'll tear old Hitler down
That's the union that'll tear the fascists down

When I think of the men and the ships going down
While the Russians fight on across the dawn
There's London in ruins and Paris in chains
Good people, what are we waiting on?
Good people, what are we waiting on?

Yes, I thank the Soviets and the mighty Chinese vets
Allies the whole wide world around
To the battling British, thanks, you can have ten million Yanks
If it takes 'em to tear the fascists down, down, down
If it takes 'em to tear the fascists down

But when I think of the ships and the men going down
While the Russians fight on across the dawn
There's London in ruins and Paris in chains
Good people, what are we waiting on?
Good people, what are we waiting on?

So I thank the Soviets and the mighty Chinese vets
Allies the whole wide world around
To the battling British, thanks, you can have ten million Yanks

If it takes 'em to tear the fascists down, down, down
If it takes 'em to tear the fascists down

Overall Meaning

Woody Guthrie's "What Are We Waiting On?" is a powerful call to arms, imploring people to join together and fight against fascism and oppression. The song begins by acknowledging the current state of the world, with a "great and bloody fight 'round this whole world tonight" and "bombs and shrapnel reign" due to Hitler's efforts to tear down unions and promote slavery. However, Guthrie remains hopeful that "our union's gonna break them slavery chains."

Guthrie then describes a moment of clarity on a mountaintop where he could see "every farm and every town" and "all the people in this whole wide world." It is this "union" of all people that will succeed in tearing down Hitler and the fascists. Guthrie expresses admiration and gratitude for the Soviet Union, Chinese veterans, and British fighters, stating that the US can offer "ten million Yanks" if needed to help take down the fascists. The song ends with the repeated question, "Good people, what are we waiting on?" encouraging listeners to take action against fascism and oppression.

This song was written in 1942 during World War II, when the US had recently entered the war and was still reeling from the Pearl Harbor attack. Guthrie was a staunch advocate for workers' rights and democracy, and this song shows his continued dedication to those values even during wartime. The message of the song remains relevant today, as fascism and oppression continue to be present in various forms around the world.

This is about World War Two...

@Josh-le6lu

Yes, but it has civil war undertones (Union's gonna break them slav'ry chains), I went ahead and changed the comment since it was just rambling bullshit no one cared about anyway like most of my comments.

@jknell87

Don't let them tell you we lost because we won back the state senate and Walker's agenda is stopped for now. We just got to keep fighting to restore union rights, not just for public sector workers but for ALL workers.
