Born in the neighborhood of Irajá, Rio de Janeiro, Zeca Pagodinho grew up around the most traditional types of samba and started making his own verses while still a kid. In the '70s, Zeca started frequenting the Carnival Block of Cacique de Ramos, which took place in Rio de Janeiro every Wednesday and became a true pagode venu (pagode is a type of samba). At one of these jams, samba singer Beth Carvalho was impressed with Zeca's skills and invited him to record the song "Camarão Que Dorme a Onda Leva". From that point on, Zeca began to record his own albums. There are now 15 of them, and four DVDs. His creative, joyful, malicious songs translate the day-by-day of the typical easygoing carioca (citizen or Rio) and are a big success in Brazil. He's one of the biggest-sellers in the country.
One of Zeca's first hits is SPC and it appeared on his first album. The SPC (it stands for Credit Protection Service) is a blacklist of bad debtors from which it is hard to get one's name removed . The song, a partnership between Arlindo Cruz and Zeca, tells the story of someone who asks a friend (or partner) to use their credit card on his behalf; afterwards, the relationship breaks up. Both of them are poor.
O Feijão De Dona Neném

Foi Dona Nenem
Que mandou preparar
Disse que a Penha lhe disse
Que o fogo de lenha
Tem bom paladar
Bota lenha na fogueira,
Deixa o feijão cozinhar
Bota lenha na fogueira,
Nenem
Não deixa o feijão queimar
Entre a cana e o tira-gosto
Era mês de agosto
Lembro muito bem
Fui na favela do Rato
Como convidado de Dona Nenem
Estranhei o movimento
Mas pensei por dentro
Vai dar tudo bem
Mas tropecei num tijolo
Esbarrei num crioulo
Que caiu também
Cheio de fome o negão
Lá no chão esperando
O feijão da Nenem
Bota lenha na fogueira, Nenem
Deixa o feijão cozinhar
Bota lenha na fogueira, Nenem
Não deixa o feijão queimar
O negão queria briga
Porém a fadiga não deu condição
Vi que era malandragem
Era pilantragem, era tudo armação
Pediram uma ajuda
Me deram a bermuda
A pá, a enxada e o carrinho de mão
Onde se lia
Primeiro a laje depois o feijão
In Zeca Pagodinho's song "O Feijão De Dona Neném," the singer tells a story about a woman named Dona Neném who prepares a delicious pot of beans over a wood fire. Dona Neném explains that the Penha told her that a wood fire adds a great flavor to the beans. As the beans cook, the singer is invited to attend a gathering in the Rato favela. While at the event, he accidentally trips and knocks over a man. The man, who is hungry and waiting for Dona Neném's beans, becomes upset with the singer but is too tired to fight. The singer realizes that the situation was all an elaborate scheme, and he is given the task of helping to build a house before being allowed to eat the beans.
The song speaks to the cultural importance and communal nature of food in Brazilian society. As the singer is invited to Dona Neném's gathering as a guest, it is indicated that sharing food is an essential aspect of Brazilian hospitality. Additionally, the need for hard work and cooperation is emphasized through the singer being expected to assist in the construction of a house in return for a delicious meal. The song paints a vivid picture of life in a favela, demonstrating the challenges faced by those living in an impoverished area.
