He is probably best known internationally for the song Senza Una Donna, which is a duet with Paul Young and hit number 4 in the latter's native United Kingdom, where Zucchero has generally made little commercial impact, in 1991. He commenced his musical career in 1970 with his first single in 1976, and his first album in 1983. His music, in Italian, Spanish and in English, is largely inspired by gospel, blues and rock music, and alternates between syrupy ballads and more rhythmic boogie-like pieces. He sang several duets, in public or on disc, with Joe Cocker, Miles Davis, Paul Young, Andrea Bocelli, Sting, Luciano Pavarotti, Tom Jones, and Johnny Hallyday.
European hit singles include Il Volo (English version: My love), Cosi Celeste, Baila (sexy thing), Diamante (featuring soul singer Randy Crawford), and Wonderful World (with Eric Clapton). Zucchero's 2004 album ZU & Co features duets with Miles Davis, Paul Young, Sheryl Crow, The Cranberries's Dolores O'Riordan, B.B. King, John Lee Hooker, Maná, Brian May, and Sting. It has sold millions of copies throughout Europe and the world and entered the Billboard 200 charts after its release in the U.S. in the summer of 2005.
In July 2005, Zucchero took part in the Live 8 concerts in both Rome and Paris. In July 2006 Zucchero's new single 'Bacco Perbacco' was released. A new studio album, produced by Don Was will be released in September.

Lacrima il tramonto
Gocce di luce dagli occhi
Nella notte cieca
È qui che è casa mia, ormai ritorno
C'incontreremo stasera
Menta e Rosmarino
Che ho preso a calci le notti
Per starti più vicino
Amor, d'amor sia, l'amor perduto
I feel so lonely tonight
Se per farmi male ti amai
I feel so lonely tonight
Se per farmi vivo ti amai
Cadono giù stalle, stelle
E una monetina
I miei pensieri in farfalle, dentro la mattina
È qui che è casa mia, ormai ritorno
I feel so lonely tonight
Se per farmi male ti amai
I feel so lonely tonight
Se per farmi vivo ti amai
Con l'anima in piena
Mi sgominai
Mi smemorai
I feel so lonely tonight
Se per farmi male ti amai
I feel so lonely tonight
Se per farmi vivo ti amai
I feel so lonely tonight
Se per farmi male ti amai
I feel so lonely tonight
Se per farmi vivo ti amai
E t'amo ancora
The lyrics of Zucchero's song Menta E Rosmarino, which translates to "Mint and Rosemary," tell a story of being lost and feeling lonely, while also expressing a sense of being at home. The first verse speaks of the falling stars and tears at sunset, representing the end of something and the start of a new journey. The reference to drops of light from the eyes in the blind night indicates the sense of hope that accompanies starting over. The singer then acknowledges that this is where he belongs and that he has come home. The phrase "Menta e Rosmarino" is repeated several times throughout the song, serving both as an allusion to the scents of those herbs and as a metaphor for the singer's journey. He has kicked away the nights to get closer to his home and his heart.
The second verse expresses the singer's feelings of loneliness and isolation, perhaps caused by the journey he has embarked upon. He still feels a love lost, but his feelings for the person are complicated. He acknowledges that he loved them, even if it caused him pain, and that he loved them, even if they helped him stay alive. The final verse speaks of the soul being full and possibly scattered or forgotten, perhaps referring to the confusion and uncertainty that comes with leaving the past behind and moving on. The song ends with a declaration of love, even though the relationship may have ended.
