Currents Convulsive
Pierce The Veil Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴

So long
Congratulations, break a leg tonight
What a shame
I heard the understudy died under the knife
Crying backwards under bedroom light

The operation

I don't think you'll ever want to love me
You'd better listen to your doctor

Sober up
And bury the empty cup
In a backyard of Seattle we used to lie
When I sew you up
Don't let me stop bleeding
Tiny stitches that you placed into my skin
Won't let me go, oh no, oh no
And they're ruining the mood
So I'll toast every beat of my heart like a miracle

And I don't think you'll ever want to love me
You'd better listen to your doctor
Doctors lie, lie, lie!
If the dollar is right
Oh my sweet little girl, hold your mouth and you'll be alright

(Gather round, gather round. Ladies and gentlemen
Come from far come from wide
The moment you've all been waiting for
Tonight, join us as we explore the spine-chilling mystery of death
And the miracle of resurrection!)

Please understand me when
I'd rather see you dead
Than live without me, so thirsty for more
Beyond the sea blue light I met the love of my life
She'd rather see me dead than face me
I like your starry eyes,
They yell surprise! Surprise!
I'm in love...but not for long

Our operation, call off the operation

Another wave has turned its back on me
Crashed back on the eyes of the first I see

(If your delicate eyes don't blink someday they might as well be gone)

Can't count on anything. For you I'd count the salt under the sea

Overall Meaning

The song "Currents Convulsive" by Pierce the Veil is about love, loss, and the pain of heartbreak. The opening lyrics refer to a theater performance, where the understudy has died under the knife, setting the theme of the song which is the loss of a loved one. The following lines alternate between desperation for love and rejection. The singer wants to be loved by their partner but is told by the doctor that they will never love them. The song takes a personal turn as the singer demands that their partner understands them and love them, even if it causes him harm. The lines "Please understand me when I'd rather see you dead than live without me" signify the singer's fixation on their partner, which is causing him mental agony. The song's one dramatic tone throughout coupled with the rawness of the lyrics makes it a distinctive alternative rock song.

One interesting fact about Pierce the Veil’s "Currents Convulsive" is that it features a video game reference. The line “I like your starry eyes, they yell surprise! Surprise!” is a reference to the classic video game, Super Mario Bros. Also, the lyrics "Crying backwards under bedroom light" were taken from a poem by singer Vic Fuentes' girlfriend at the time, who was studying literature. The song was recorded in producer Mike green's vintage studio in California, and additional vocals are provided by Members of The Sounds, performed by Martin Skold, Jesper Anderberg, Felix Rodriguez, Johan Bengtsson and Fredrik Nilsson, who also contributed to the backing vocals of the album.

@bottombykatiemcgrath

Hasta luego
Felicitaciones
Romper una pierna esta noche
Qué lástima escuché que el suplente murió bajo el cuchillo
Llorando al revés
Bajo las luces del dormitorio
La operación
Felicitaciones

Creo que nunca querrás amarme. Será mejor que escuches a tu médico, doctor
Sobrio
Y enterrar la taza vacía
En un patio trasero de Seattle
Solíamos mentir
Cuando te cosí
No me dejes
Deja de sangrar
Pequeños puntos que colocaste en mi piel
No me dejarás ir
Oh no, oh no

Damas y caballeros

Me gustan tus ojos estrellados
Gritan sorpresa, sorpresa
Si algún día tus ojos delicados no parpadean, bien podrían haberse ido

I saw them live and they opened with this song at a venue in Atlanta called The Masquerade in 2008. It was so amazing....the crowd did not know how to react to Vic's voice haha. I went straight home and found them on Myspace and was a fan since. I just saw them again in 2022 here in Texas.

@kianedwardpaz1653

So fuckin' underrated

@dianacutie99

this is so nostalgiac omg. i feel like im 13 again, crying over my first ever heartbreak... but like,, in a good way lmao. it's been many years since and frankly, ive been in a happy healthy longterm relationship for quite a bit now, so o really struggle relating to the music nowadays, but the emotional impact it had on me back when i was younger will never be erased by time, and listening to it will always be comforting for me.
