Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Overall Meaning

These lyrics are from the song "唐人物語" (Toujin Monogatari) by サザンオールスターズ (Southern All Stars). The song tells a tale set in a nameless town where the foreign sun rises. It portrays a young girl who understands the sadness she feels is for the sake of her country. The spring nights are long, and the bell rings at Ryouzen Temple. One can choose to cry over destiny, as the fleeting emotions of this transient world can be heartbreaking.

The lyrics also mention the arrival of black ships at Shimoda Port, swaying far beyond the horizon. This references a time when Japan was undergoing rapid modernization and opening up to the world after a long period of isolation. The girl, beautiful and with pure intentions, goes on a journey, carried in a palanquin, but is tossed around by the whims of the times.

There is a sense of melancholy in the lyrics, as the cherry blossoms bloom on Toujinsaka (a hill known for its cherry blossoms). Each person's thoughts are circling, and the sight of a single flower vase made of scattered flowers is alluring on a spring night. The lyrics also mention a woman who abandons the world and is pursued by it, leaving Inabesawa (a location mentioned in Japanese folklore).

The lyrics also hint at the transient nature of life, with a reference to a tale sung by the morning bird, an echo from a distant past. It reminds us that death may be easy, but living is difficult, as entrusted to the sound of the shamisen. The lyrics mention the tying of rattan grass with stones or pebbles, suggesting a sense of exclusion and betrayal for each individual. They also mention a man loved by the singer, who leaves amidst tears of love and rain.

Overall, the lyrics express a bittersweet story of a young girl caught in the changing times and carrying the weight of her emotions for her country. It touches on themes of love, loss, and the fleeting nature of life.
