The band's roots trace back to 1975, when Kuwata Keisuke was part of a popular group Better Days. The group saw many changes to its name and members. It was when keyboardist Hara Yuko and bassist Sekiguchi Kazuyuki joined the group that it had a permanent name.
After more and more changes of members, the group finally saw light as they released their debut single 'Katte ni Sinbad' in 1978.
January of 2000 saw the release of TSUNAMI, which was #1 on the Oricon charts for 5 weeks, selling almost 3 million copies. The single was marked the 3rd best-selling one in Japan.
In 2003, HMV Japan announced Southern All Stars to be the No.1 Japanese pop artist in its survey of “Top 100 Japanese pops Artists” all-time.

My Cherie Amour
We're fallin' fallin'
I'm sorry boy
We're callin', callin'
Nanananana nananananana
Nanananana nananana
(Kanashimi wa Meri Gorando, translated as "Sadness is a Merry-Go-Round") depict a sense of living in a cold and cruel world where dreams persist. The phrase "あんな冷酷遊戯の彼方に" (anna reikoku yuugi no kanata ni) may suggest a distant place where a cold and heartless game is played. The singer expresses how they have continued to live their dreams despite the recurring sadness and heartache. The line "心にゃ何度も merry-go-round" (kokoro nya nandomo merry-go-round) symbolizes the repeated cycle of emotions, like the turning of a merry-go-round.
The lyrics also touch upon a past filled with memories buried in white sand, represented by the line "My Cherie Amour 名前さえ 白い砂に埋めた日々" (My Cherie Amour namae sae shiroi suna ni umeta hibi). The mention of history bending their heart may suggest how external factors have influenced and shaped them. Interestingly, the lyrics mention that the person next to them is crying, indicating the presence of others dealing with their own sadness. The phrase "We're fallin' fallin' 同じ顔で" (We're fallin' fallin' onaji kao de) may allude to the idea that everyone is falling together with similar expressions on their faces.
The lyrics then ask the listener to look at different perspectives and acknowledge the shame that comes along with it. The line "ちょいと真相八方を見てごらん 己も恥ずかしい" (choito shinsou happou o mite goran onore mo hazukashii) implies encouraging the listener to see different truths and admitting their own embarrassment. The following lines inquire about who will wipe away the tears of a round-faced young girl, emphasizing the need for comfort and support.
In the second part of the song, the singer apologizes, referring to themselves as a "boy." They mention that even their friends have decided to make this place their home, suggesting a sense of resignation and acceptance. The phrase "生きてくことを望むなら 冷たい風が吹いてる" (ikiteku koto o nozomu nara tsumetai kaze ga fuiteru) portrays the difficulty and challenges of living, as symbolized by the cold wind blowing. The repetition of "We're callin', callin' 夜は長い" (We're callin', callin', yoru wa nagai) emphasizes the long nights filled with longing or anticipation.
Overall, the lyrics of 悲しみはメリーゴーランド express a sense of enduring through sadness and challenging circumstances, while also acknowledging the interconnectedness of others' experiences and the need for understanding and empathy. The theme of a merry-go-round symbolizes the cyclic nature of emotions and the ride of life.
