The band's roots trace back to 1975, when Kuwata Keisuke was part of a popular group Better Days. The group saw many changes to its name and members. It was when keyboardist Hara Yuko and bassist Sekiguchi Kazuyuki joined the group that it had a permanent name.
After more and more changes of members, the group finally saw light as they released their debut single 'Katte ni Sinbad' in 1978.
January of 2000 saw the release of TSUNAMI, which was #1 on the Oricon charts for 5 weeks, selling almost 3 million copies. The single was marked the 3rd best-selling one in Japan.
In 2003, HMV Japan announced Southern All Stars to be the No.1 Japanese pop artist in its survey of “Top 100 Japanese pops Artists” all-time.

NEVER FALL IN LOVE AGAIN

I'll never fall in love again, ooh
I'll never cry for you again, ooh
Ray Charles
Na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na
I'll never fall in love again, ooh
In "Never Fall in Love Again" by サザンオールスターズ, the lyrics depict a sense of resignation and heartbreak. The first verse expresses the singer's feeling of a cold September wind tightening their body, metaphorically representing a sense of emptiness or loneliness that they are experiencing. They believe that there is another person in the mind of their loved one, making them feel replaceable and unimportant. The repeated line "I'll never fall in love again" reflects the singer's resolve to protect themselves from further pain and disappointment. They feel like everything is futile and hopeless, hence the line "もう何もかも駄目な darlin'" (Everything is useless, darlin').
The second verse illustrates the singer's struggle to find solace even when seeking guidance from friends. They refuse to disclose their whereabouts and constantly say words that contradict their true feelings. This reflects their internal conflict, trying to maintain a facade while their emotions are in disarray. The line "I'll never cry for you again" emphasizes their determination to stop shedding tears and move on. The singer realizes that they cannot endure this any longer, suggesting that their patience has reached its limit.
The mention of Ray Charles, a favorite artist, signifies the singer's attempt to find comfort in music. However, even listening to Ray Charles alone feels empty, highlighting the profound sense of loss they are experiencing. This further reinforces their belief that finding solace or connection through external means is futile.
The last section refers to receiving a letter with a farewell kiss mark, implying that the relationship has ended and they will no longer have the opportunity to meet their loved one again. The repetition of "na, na, na" following this phrase adds a sense of lamentation and finality to the lyrics. The line "もう逢うこともないね" (We will never meet again) emphasizes the finality and confirms the singer's belief that moving on and not falling in love again is the only way to protect themselves from further pain.
Overall, the lyrics of "Never Fall in Love Again" reflect a sense of emotional exhaustion, resignation, and the singer's determination to guard their heart from future hurt.
