The band's roots trace back to 1975, when Kuwata Keisuke was part of a popular group Better Days. The group saw many changes to its name and members. It was when keyboardist Hara Yuko and bassist Sekiguchi Kazuyuki joined the group that it had a permanent name.
After more and more changes of members, the group finally saw light as they released their debut single 'Katte ni Sinbad' in 1978.
January of 2000 saw the release of TSUNAMI, which was #1 on the Oricon charts for 5 weeks, selling almost 3 million copies. The single was marked the 3rd best-selling one in Japan.
In 2003, HMV Japan announced Southern All Stars to be the No.1 Japanese pop artist in its survey of “Top 100 Japanese pops Artists” all-time.

Sweet sweet, da-ba-da どうか never die!!
Sweet sweet, da-ba-da そうさ never cry!!
Yarlen shuffle
汚れた life and time
Sweet sweet, da-ba-da どうか never die!!
Sweet sweet, da-ba-da そうさ never cry!!
Amen" shuffle
Sweet sweet, da-ba-da どうか never die!!
Sweet sweet, da-ba-da そうさ never cry!!
Yarlen shuffle
Yarlen shuffle, ooh shuffle
Ooh, Yarlen shuffle
Yarlen shuffle
The lyrics to "YARLEN SHUFFLE〜子羊達へのレクイエム〜" by サザンオールスターズ convey a message about the struggles and hardships of different individuals in society. The song starts by addressing the resentment felt by students towards their tired and unenthusiastic teachers in a seemingly dependable school, where emotions are replaced by cold numbers. It then moves on to portray the discouragement felt by employees towards their demanding and collapsing organizations, with the absence of support or hope for the next day.
The chorus introduces the concept of a lonesome flower on the verge of breaking in the rain, encouraging the person to not cry alone but instead come and wipe the tears in paradise. It is an anthem to never die and never stop dreaming, with a plea to continue singing the love scream. The lyrics then shift focus to a troubled married couple, describing how the wife despairs over her loveless husband, and the breakdown of love in their everyday life. It further touches on the frustration of witnessing a government lacking in love and the rise of corrupt lineage in society.
The song continues with a call to embrace the lonesome flower that is about to wither and to come and meet in a lullaby, alleviating the burden of worries. It accentuates the importance of never giving up on dreams and love, making a reference to a laughable moment before crying and labeling it as the "Amen" shuffle. In the final verses, it emphasizes the need to never stop dreaming and never stop screaming for love, as the sorrowful song becomes the Yarlen shuffle of those who have been tamed.
