At the age of 5, her family left for Paris. When she was 19, she decided to stop studying art and architecture, to become a full-time model.
She was a very successful fashion model until 1998. Since then she has devoted herself to chanson. Her debut album, Quelqu'un m'a dit, on which she sings in French (despite her Italian origin), was released in 2002. To date it has sold over a million copies across Europe. Her second album, No Promises (this time in English, with songs inspired by famous English-language poets), was released in January 2007.
She married then French president, Nicolas Sarkozy, in the beginning of 2008.
Her music career still did not cease after becoming the First Lady. She released her third album Comme si de rien n'était ("As If Nothing Happened") on 11 July 2008. The songs are self-penned except for one rendition of You Belong to Me and another song featuring a poem by Michel Houellebecq set to music. Royalties from the album will be donated to unidentified charitable and humanitarian cause.
L'excessive
Carla Bruni Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
C'est inexplicable
Même inexorable
C'est pas pour l'extase
C'est que l'existence
Sans un peu d'extrême
Est inacceptable
J'suis excessive
J'aime quand ça désaxe
Quand tout accélère
Moi je reste relax
J'suis excessive
J'suis excessive
J'aime quand ça désaxe
Quand tout accélère
Moi je reste relax
J'suis excessive
Quand tout explose
Quand la vie s'exhibe
C'est une transe exquise, oui
J'suis excessive
J'aime quand ça désaxe
Quand tout exagère
Moi je reste relax
J'suis excessive
Excessivement gaie
Excessivement triste
C'est là que j'existe
Pas d'excuse (pas d'excuse)
In the song 'L'excessive', Carla Bruni admits to being excessive in nature but rejects any attempts to justify or explain her behavior. She finds life intolerable without a bit of extreme behavior, and confesses to taking pleasure in moments when everything is falling apart. Bruni acknowledges that her behavior may be difficult for some to handle, that they may feel exasperated or even offended, and that some may demand that she conform to their expectations. But for her, it's the moments of chaos and unbridled expression that make life worth living.
The song is a celebration of Bruni's individuality and a rejection of societal expectations that seek to stifle that individuality. It is a call to embrace one's quirks and idiosyncrasies, to reject conformity and embrace an authentic, unapologetic self. In doing so, the song suggests, one can find a beautiful, ecstatic sense of freedom that is worth all the judgment and criticism that may come with it.
Overall, 'L'excessive' is a song about taking risks, challenging conventions, and acknowledging the complexities and contradictions of the human experience. It's a song that encourages us to embrace our true selves, flaws and all, and to live life to the fullest, even if that means being a little excessive at times.
