The firstborn son of Sérgio Buarque de Hollanda, Buarque lived at several locations throughout his childhood, though mostly in Rio de Janeiro, São Paulo, and Rome. He wrote and studied literature as a child and found music through the bossa nova compositions of Tom Jobim and João Gilberto. He performed as a singer and guitarist in the 1960s as well as writing a play that was deemed dangerous by the Brazilian military dictatorship of the time. Buarque, along with several Tropicalist and MPB musicians, was threatened by the Brazilian military government and eventually left Brazil for Italy in 1969. However, he came back to Brazil in 1970, and continued to record, perform, and write, though much of his material was suppressed by government censors. He released several more albums in the 1980s and published three novels in the 1990s and 2000s.
In 2019, Buarque was awarded the Camões Prize, the most important prize for literature in the Portuguese language.
Palavra De Mulher

Haja o que houver, eu vou voltar
Já te deixei jurando nunca mais olhar pra trás
Palavra de mulher, eu vou voltar
Posso até
Sair de bar em bar, falar besteira
E me enganar
Com qualquer um deitar
Eu vou te amar
Vou chegar
A qualquer hora ao meu lugar
E se uma outra pretendia um dia te roubar
Dispensa essa vadia
Eu vou voltar
Vou subir
A nossa escada, a escada, a escada, a escada
Meu amor, eu vou partir
De novo e sempre, feito viciada
Eu vou voltar
Pode ser
Que a nossa história
Seja mais uma quimera
E pode o nosso teto, a Lapa, o Rio desabar
Pode ser
Que passe o nosso tempo
Como qualquer primavera.
Espera
Me espera
Eu vou voltar
The lyrics to Chico Buarque's song "Palavra De Mulher" ("Woman's Word" in English) is about a woman who has left her lover but promises to return no matter what. The first verse expresses her determination to return, even though she had left with the intention of never looking back. She reiterates that her word as a woman is her bond and she promises to go back. The second verse shows the woman's vulnerability as she admits that she may "sair de bar em bar" (go from bar to bar) and "falar besteira" (talk nonsense) in an attempt to forget him, but the truth is she will always love him. The final verse shows her stubbornness as she declares that she will return no matter what obstacles may come their way - whether it be another woman who tries to steal him away or the collapse of their city (represented by Lapa and Rio in the lyrics). She asks him to wait for her because she is coming back.
The song speaks to the contradictions and complexities of love and relationships. It portrays a woman who is both strong and weak, determined and vulnerable. The phrase "palavra de mulher" emphasizes the importance of a woman's word and the significance of keeping promises.
