I'll Buy You a Star
Eddie Fisher Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

There's nothing that I know here on this earth good enough for you
So if I want to show you all you're worth,
I'd have to try shopping up in the sky.

I'll buy you a star,
Not just a star but the best one in the sky.
You'll have a cloud to sleep on,
A cloud as light as an angel's sigh.
A fine silver chain made from the rain of a summer afternoon.

I'll buy you a star my darling
But I won't rest until I buy the moon.
A fine silver chain made from the rain of a summer afternoon.

I'll buy you a star my darling

But I won't rest until I buy the moon.
But I won't rest until I buy the moon.

In Eddie Fisher's song "I'll Buy You a Star," the lyrics express a deep admiration and love for someone. The singer acknowledges that nothing on Earth is good enough for the person they are addressing. They believe that in order to truly demonstrate the person's worth, they would have to search beyond Earth, even into the sky. This hints at the idea that the love they have for this person is extraordinary and exceeds anything that can be found in the ordinary world.

The singer then goes on to propose buying a star for their loved one. This is not just any star, but the best one in the sky. By buying this star, the singer wants to give the person something precious and unique. Furthermore, they offer a cloud for their loved one to sleep on, symbolizing comfort and tranquility. The cloud is described as being as light as an angel's sigh, suggesting a sense of purity and heavenly peace.

I remember Eddie singing Oscar nominated songs on the Oscar telecast. I remember the shows from the late 50s, when I was just a kid, and stayed up late waiting to see Eddie sing a nominated song.

Just great. What a way he has with a song. George Burns would laughingly refer to himself as silver throat. Eddie is indeed the possessor of a golden voice.

Betty Racine

Me too. Would have been nice to have a follow up album. I guess Eddie was busy with other things, but at least we have this album. No one could sing like Eddie, no one...

Mark New

Interesting to note: The following year Eddie sang rhe Oscar winning song at the Oscars ceremony. I think it was "Love is a Many Spendired Thing." Also, he probably never made a follow-up as he was only with RCA another 4years after this album. Would have been a nice follow-up during his second RCA period from '66-'68 in his deeper-60's voice.

Mark New

Thank you. Love this album. Have it on vinyl... Wished he had made a follow-up with post 1955-6 Oscar winning songs...

CarlDuke

On the album he said he would update things as new songs won the Academy Award, but as they the best laid plans etc.
