Mona Lisa
Eddie Fisher Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Mona Lisa, Mona Lisa, men have named you
You're so like the lady with the mystic smile
Is it only 'cause you're lonely they have blamed you?
For that Mona Lisa strangeness in your smile?

Do you smile to tempt a lover, Mona Lisa?
Or is this your way to hide a broken heart?
Many dreams have been brought to your doorstep
They just lie there and they die there
Are you warm, are you real, Mona Lisa?
Or just a cold and lonely lovely work of art?

Do you smile to tempt a lover, Mona Lisa?
Or is this your way to hide a broken heart?
Many dreams have been brought to your doorstep
They just lie there and they die there
Are you warm, are you real, Mona Lisa?
Or just a cold and lonely lovely work of art?

Mona Lisa, Mona Lisa

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Eddie Fisher's song "Mona Lisa" explore the enigmatic nature of the famous painting by Leonardo da Vinci, and draw parallels between the painting and a mysterious woman. In the first verse, the singer addresses Mona Lisa, remarking on how men have named her and comparing her to the lady with the mysterious smile. He wonders whether the perception of her strangeness is due to her loneliness, as if her solitude has somehow tainted her image.

The chorus of the song poses the question of why Mona Lisa smiles, suggesting two possibilities. The first is that her smile is meant to tempt a lover, implying that she is using her allure to hide a broken heart. The second possibility is that her smile is simply a facade, a way for her to conceal her own loneliness and emotional pain. The singer ponders the many dreams that have been brought to her doorstep, but emphasizes that they go unfulfilled and ultimately perish in her presence. He wonders if she is truly warm and real, or if she is merely a cold and lonely work of art.

Overall, these lyrics capture the fascination and intrigue surrounding the famous painting, interpreting it as a representation of a woman who may be hiding her true emotions behind a captivating smile.

No one breaths soul into this song like Nat King Cole. Seldom have we seen a better pairing of song and singer. Time has given its verdict: Mona Lisa is Nat King Cole's daughter. Others who have attempted to record this number are at best step-dads.

Just great. Eddie is nonpareil. The Nat Cole version pales in comparison.
