Over the Rainbow
Eddie Fisher Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Somewhere over the rainbow, way up high
There's a land that I've heard of once in a lullaby.
Somewhere over the rainbow, skies are blue
And the dreams that you dare to dream,
Really do come true.

Someday I'll wish upon a star
And wake up where the clouds are far behind me.
Where troubles melt like lemon drops,
High above the chimney tops,
That's where you'll find me.

Somewhere over the rainbow, blue birds fly
Birds fly over the rainbow
Why then, oh why can't I?
If happy little bluebirds fly beyond the rainbow
Why, oh why can't I?

Somewhere over the rainbow, way up high
There's a land that I've heard of once in a lullaby.
Somewhere over the rainbow, skies are blue
And the dreams that you dare to dream,
Really do come true.

Someday I'll wish upon a star
And wake up where the clouds are far behind me.
Where troubles melt like lemon drops,
High above the chimney tops,
That's where you'll find me.

Somewhere over the rainbow, blue birds fly
Birds fly over the rainbow
Why then, oh why can't I?

If happy little bluebirds fly beyond the rainbow
Why, oh why can't I?

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Eddie Fisher's song "Over the Rainbow" convey a sense of longing and a yearning for something beyond the boundaries of reality. The song begins by describing a distant and magical place, symbolized by the phrase "Somewhere over the rainbow, way up high." It is a place that the singer has only heard of in a lullaby, suggesting that it exists in the realm of imagination and dreams.

The song continues to explore this fantasy land where the skies are always blue and dreams truly come true. It reflects the belief that there is a better and more vibrant world beyond the limitations of daily life. The singer expresses their desire to escape their troubles and worries, envisioning a place where these problems dissolve like lemon drops.

The second verse introduces the idea of wishing upon a star, an emblem of hope and possibility. The singer yearns to be freed from clouds and troubles, to find solace and happiness in a place high above society's expectations, represented by the chimney tops. The repeated question "Why, oh why can't I?" reveals the singer's frustration at being unable to reach this magical place, despite seeing birds fly over the rainbow. It signifies the universal human desire to transcend the constraints of reality and find a sense of fulfillment.

Overall, the lyrics of "Over the Rainbow" evoke a sense of longing for a utopian realm where dreams come true and troubles fade away. It speaks to the universal human desire for freedom, happiness, and the pursuit of something beyond our everyday lives.

Eddie's version of Over The Rainbow is stunningly beautiful. I can feel the emotion he puts into it. Eddie Fisher is simply the best.....

Thank you so much for this post. Eddie was a wonderful singer and his talent often gets overshadowed and forgotten by his personal life. The brilliant stage actress Evelyn Burrows was a close friend of both Eddie and Elizabeth and often said he was her favorite singer of all time. Sadly Eddie became a victim of drug addiction but had the courage and strength of character to fight his way back from despair several times in his lifetime. Life for some can be a difficult challenge when you're wealthy and so famous. We miss you dear Mr. Fisher.

Eddie sings it better than anyone. How I wish I could go back to the fifties & listen to all those wonderful songs. It's mostly garbage now.
