Hardy signed her first contract with the record label Vogue in November 1961. In April 1962, shortly after finishing school, her first album, "Oh oh Chéri", appeared, with the title song written by Johnny Hallyday's writing duo. The flip side of the record, "Tous les garçons et les filles" became a huge success, which sold 2 million copies. She had long hair and usually wore jeans with a leather jacket, while accompanying her songs on the guitar.
She sang in English, Spanish, and German occasionally. In 1963, she represented Monaco in the Grand Prix d'Eurovision de la Chanson with "L'amour s'en va" and emerged in fifth place. In 1968, she received the Grand Prix du Disque Académie Charles Cros.
In 1981, she married her long-time companion Jacques Dutronc, with whom she had already had a son (Thomas Dutronc) in 1973. In May 2000, she had a comeback with the album "Clair Obscur". Her son played the guitar, and her husband sang the duet "Puisque vous partez en voyage". Iggy Pop and Etienne Daho participated, as well. She currently lives near Paris.
In 2006 she released a new duets album entitled "Parenthèses" which included a song with her son Thomas.
In 2021, Hardy announced that her health had worsened and that she would not be able to sing again owing to the effects of cancer therapy.

Pour me faire plaisir
Quand tu m'as embrassée
Ce n'est pas que j'aie peur
Qu'on se moque de moi
Mais plutôt j'aurais peur
Qu'on se moque de toi
The song Va pas prendre un tambour by Françoise Hardy is about the singer warning her lover not to announce their relationship publicly, as she is not sure if it is going to last. She is worried about people making fun of them for trying to be in a relationship without any assurance about the future. She tells him that in case he announces their relationship and it doesn't work out, she might not be ready to handle it and may end up hurting him. She confesses that she was vulnerable and alone when she met him, and he was there to support her, but she doesn't want everyone to know about it. She also admits that she had been using him to forget a past love and doesn't want him to become the subject of ridicule and rumors.
The line "Va pas prendre un tambour" translates to "Don't go announce it with a drum." Here, the use of the word "tambour" refers to the traditional practice of making an announcement in public by playing drums or using some other loud instrument as a medium. The song has a melodic rhythm with light and soft guitar chords, which gives it a romantic and calming feel. Hardy's delicate voice adds a tender and soothing quality that enhances the emotions in the lyrics.

Va pas prendre un tambour
Don't make a big announcement
Pour aller annoncer
About what happened between us
Que tu m'as fait la cour
That you pursued me
Et que ca a marché
And won me over
Car si tu ne dis rien
Because if you keep quiet
De ce qui s'est passé
About what really happened
Peut-être que demain
Maybe tomorrow
Je recommencerai
I'll do it all over again
Si mon cœur a battu contre toi
If my heart raced for you
It's not for the reasons you think
I was all alone and feeling cold
Tu étais là, étais là
You were there for me
Va pas prendre un tambour
Don't make a big announcement
Pour aller annoncer
About the little secrets I shared with you
Que tu as fait le tour
That you know everything about me
De mes petits secrets
My personal and private matters
Tout ce que je t'ai dit
Everything I told you
Pour te faire plaisir
Was just to please you
Quelqu'un me l'avait dit
Someone else gave me the information
Pour me faire plaisir
Just to make me happy
Don't be angry, I was just trying with you
To forget a boy from last summer
Someone I truly loved
Tu le connais
You know who he is
Va pas prendre un tambour
Don't make a big announcement
Pour aller annoncer
That you taught me about love
Que j'ai compris l'amour
That I finally grasped the concept of love
Quand tu m'as embrassée
When you kissed me
Ce n'est pas que j'aie peur
It's not that I'm afraid
Qu'on se moque de moi
Of being laughed at
Mais plutôt j'aurais peur
But I'm more worried
Qu'on se moque de toi
That they'll make fun of you
