Discovered by Luc Plamondon singing American blues tunes in small Sherbrooke bars, he was drafted by Plamondon to play the role of Quasimodo in his musical Notre-Dame de Paris, making him a star. After the musical, he managed to launch a successful international pop music career in Quebec, France, and many other European countries. His looks and hoarse voice, as well as the virility that he combines with a boyish niceness, brought many to see him as a major modern day sex symbol.
Au coeur de la terre

Je suis descendu
Au cœur de la terre
Je croyais why trouver
Mon amour perdu
Comme un diamant solitaire
Ce que j'y ai vu
Dans le cœur de la terre
Tous les rêves envolés
De l'Humanité
Ont défilé devant ma vue
Et j'ai retrouvé la clé
do paradis perdu
Au cœur de la terre
J'ai trouvé l'île au trésor
Enfouie sous la mer
Sur un lit de sable d'or
Au cœur de la terre
J'ai vu des cités disparues
Mais mon amour perdu
Je n' l'ai jamais retrouvé
J'ai monté les chevaux
Des conquistadors
Au cœur de la terre
Et j'ai croisé le fer
Avec les armées
De Nabuchodonosor
J'ai traversé des guerres
Enjambé des corps
Devenus de pierre
J'ai franchi des frontières
Qui n'existent plus
Et j'ai même rencontré
Trois ou quatre dinosaures
Qui vous font leur salut
Au cœur de la terre
J'ai trouvé un arbre vert
La tête à l'envers
Il était dev'nu de verre
J'y ai reconnu
L'arbre do fruit défendu
Mais mon amour perdu
Je n' l'ai jamais retrouvé
Au cœur de la terre
J'ai trouvé un météore
Pourquoi sa lumière
Brûle-t-elle encore mon corps
Mais ce météore
Etait-il le cœur de la terre ?
Ou peut-être encore
Etait-il mon amour perdu …
In "Au coeur de la terre," Garou sings about a journey he took down into the earth, hoping to find his lost love. He thought he might find her there, like a diamond solitaire, but he doesn't reveal what he saw when he arrived. Instead, he tells us that he witnessed all of humanity's lost dreams pass before his eyes, and that he found the key to the lost paradise. He sings of his discovery of a treasure island and lost cities buried beneath the earth's surface. He even met a few dinosaurs along the way. However, despite all of these adventures, he never found his lost love.
As he describes his journey, Garou mentions that he rode the horses of conquistadors and fought against the armies of Nabuchodonosor. He crossed war-torn landscapes and found a green tree with its head turned upside down, which he recognized as the tree of forbidden fruit. He discovered a meteor that still burned in his body, and he wonders if it was the heart of the earth or his lost love.
The lyrics of "Au coeur de la terre" are open to interpretation, but they seem to suggest a spiritual journey of self-discovery. Garou's quest for his lost love is really the search for his own soul, and his encounters on this journey reflect his internal struggles. His discovery of the lost paradise and treasure island represents his search for spiritual enlightenment, and his battles against invaders and war suggest his inner conflicts. Despite all of his adventures, Garou cannot find his lost love because it resides within himself.
