To say someone was replaced infers criticism, so indeed it is enigmatic, especially in view of Annette Blik's distinguished career. Quartets, amateur as well as professional, function on positive personality fits as well as musical skills and that requires discretion. But this is a really enjoyable performance with good video carefully cued. One feels it is Mozart and not an imposition.

Great playing, unlike affected playing you hear today. 2nd violinist sounds great here. I wonder what the reasons for her departure.

This isn't the original Hagen Quartet. The original was composed of four Hagen siblings including Angelika Hagen on second violin. This is the second iteration of the quartet with Annette Bik instead of Angelika Hagen.

Since Annette Bik was replaced in 1987, this clip was made no later than that. Thanks

Why did they replace the 2nd violinist?

Waggish Sagacity

I suspect that the explanatory blurb above was written in German. In German, 'Ersetzen' means both to replace and to the take place of. In English the term "replaced" suggests "firing" or dispute. Unless we know anything different, I suggest that Annette Bilk might have moved to another country, or found a position as a first violinist, or took time out to raise a child or was tired of traveling the world etc. She, in other words, decided to leave, and thus was "replaced" by another second violinist. This interpretation was, I think, lost in translation

Is it not a playback performance on a version from the Talich Quatuor (in the 80's)...?
