Its home base is the world-famous Musikverein. The members of the orchestra are chosen from the Orchestra of the Vienna State Opera.
The orchestra can trace its origins back to 1842, when Otto Nicolai formed what he called a "Philharmonic Academy"; it was an orchestra which was fully independent, and which took all its decisions by a democratic vote of all its members. These are principles the orchestra still holds today. Since 1933, the orchestra has had no one principal conductor, but instead has a number of guest conductors. These have included almost a great number of the world's best known conductors, including Richard Strauss, Karl Böhm, Herbert von Karajan, Georg Solti, Erich Kleiber, Carlos Kleiber, Leonard Bernstein, and Claudio Abbado.

I will NEVER forget the first time I heard a recording of Mitsuko Uchida playing Mozart. I was immediately transfixed to where I was and lost track of all else. It seemed as if Mozart were alive and playing for me. Nothing has changed in the twenty plus years since: each performance is immaculately on fire, full of presence and life. She has flawless tempi, pedal and key pressures are perfect, the tuning is exquisite: we are in Heaven! Yes, I do worship her, and she truly deserves it.

Oh yes... Indeed, we are in heaven with Mozart and Mitsuko 💚🎵🎵💙

A wonderful performance of my favorite Mozart piano concertos. Brava Mitsuko!

This is easily the best interpretation that I've heard of Mozart's Coronation concerto. It's a much better piece than I gave it credit for. What a revelation this performance is--especially the first movement. Like her rendition of K451 she's seems to convey the "masculine" energy in many of his faster movements. She's not all Dresden china. It's Mozart with balls......and from a female pianist(this is not an anomaly at all).

You fool.

What do you mean she's an old person who pretends to play like a young person? This recording is thirty years old.

If you want to hear a better Mozart interpretation, listen to "Mozart Piano Concerto 26. Aimi Kobayashi" on youtube. Even though she is so young, her vision is enthralling and fresh.
Uchida plays with nice embellishments but it feels very contrived. She plays with youthful vigor in one phrase but, on the next phrase, plays like an older mature person which she is. It isn't consistent. She lingers and over broods in many passing phrases, which is unnecessary. It is contrived. Uchida is a fine, detailed pianist but she is an older person who pretends to play like a young person. Little Koyabashi plays naturally and does not pretend nor knows how to.

Absolutely wonderful! My thanks to the performers, and Mozart, of course.
