Here's my breakdown of the key themes and possible meanings:

Lifestyle and Habits

- I take my whiskey neat / My coffee black and my bed at three symbolizes his preference for things that are straightforward, unfiltered, and perhaps unconventional. These choices reflect a desire for experiences that are authentic and potent, mirroring his approach to life. reflecting a broader inclination towards facing life’s complexities head-on.
- This contrasts with the other person’s lifestyle, which he perceives as too “sweet” basically living in a fairytale avoiding life’s hard and uncomfortable truths or perhaps lacking the depth and authenticity he craves.

Emotional Maturity and Incompatibility
the song has nothing to do with age. Its about maturity.

- The repeated line, You’re too sweet for me suggests that the person in question has a disposition or outlook on life that is too childlike, naive, sugar-coated, or simply too different from his. This sweetness is juxtaposed with his preference for the "neat" and "black" aspects of life, implying an ability to handle life’s bitterness which he finds more authentic or relatable.
- The lyrics also touch on the idea of living fully but differently. The other person is described with a positive almost pure imagery ( bright as the morning / As soft as the rain ), yet he feels he cannot fully align with this perspective. This refrain suggests not just a difference in taste but a deeper emotional and philosophical incompatibility. The “sweetness/purity” here could imply a naivety or gullibility in the other person’s approach to life, which doesn’t resonate with his more seasoned or perhaps cynical perspective. The song suggests a maturity in embracing life’s bitter days, indicating a resilience and depth of character that he values and identifies himself with.

Acceptance of Differences

- Despite these differences, there's an undercurrent of respect and perhaps affection for the other person's way of being. He seems to understand and appreciate the qualities of the other person maybe they aren't this childlike naive person maybe they're just high on life If you’re drunk on life, babe / I think it’s great but acknowledges a fundamental mismatch in their approaches to life and relationships.

Reflection on Life and Death

- But who wants to live forever babe suggests a contemplation of mortality and the ways people choose to experience life. He opts for a more immediate, perhaps hedonistic approach, while still recognizing the validity of the other person's more sheltered or cautious way of living.

I wouldn't say his singing a love song or a rejection song, it's a mature acceptance of their incompatibility and differences
EDIT:
I wholeheartedly agree that
"sweetness" is not inherently negative, The intention was not to cast those qualities in a negative light but rather to highlight the contrast as depicted in the song's narrative. I believe the song is speaking of an emotionally immature or emotionally sensitive person who prefers things sugarcoated, overly gentle, and would rather avoid life's hard and uncomfortable truths. I think the emotionally immature person's "sweetness" isn't authentic but more of a shield to protect them from reality and This person may opt for a gentler, more sugarcoated experience, potentially shying away from the rawness of life's difficulties, whereas he seems to prefer brutal truths, This is someone who values directness and forthrightness, preferring life's narratives to be delivered without embellishment-a 'give it to me straight' mentality.

Beautifully put, thank you for taking the time to write that out.

I resonate with the Acceptance of Difference thought the most.
The person sees the beauty in the soul of the 'Too Sweet' lifestyle, but at least right now I can't match that... And you don't deserve to wait around for me to do so. I enjoy life's simple pleasures right now, black coffee/strong liquor/sleeping in/ working and staying up late.

Now as I said, I see the beauty in that but I'm just not there. So if I could put you in a barrell, to continue to age, so I can have you in the future. I would
But I can't bare to do that to you, it's unfair so until then I do me and you do you.
Well see what the future holds...

-How wild is this in life when potentially the two are soulMates? A game of try not to think about you everyday and work on myself, though your entire being craves them. Though you know the love between you two burns silver flame so hot it's cold.... Something beyond the traditional word "Love".
Together they created something new.
Something Divine... Unbound... And yes, at times, Difficult... Complex... 🍑

"But that's the thing isn't it... Feeling a pain as strong as this reveals how powerful the connection between the two of us really was".

@jarredbeggs1450

@Lua_557

I honestly LOVE this, thank you!

@noelle2654

I want to start with saying I love what you were able to take away from this song, but I wanted to add a different perspective. I think it's harmful to insinuate that "sweet" only has negative connotations. I say this because you likened it to this other person being naive or gullible. I feel the perspective that only things that are hard, negative, or potent are "real" is limited. I think kindness and gentleness are just as real, depending on the person. One person's inability to be soft, kind, or "sweet" doesn't equate to someone else's sweetness being disingenuous, or artificial. Some people are just nice or "sweet", even when things are hard. Neither side should be seen as negative, simply different.

@elizabethjean2709

Didn't read this but the fact fans jump at the opportunity to delve into the meaning is ENOUGH. He's amazing.
