Aufray represented Luxembourg in the 1964 Eurovision Song Contest, performing the song "Dès que le printemps revient" and finishing fourth. His most famous songs are "Santiano," "Céline," "Stewball" and in Spanish, "Barco de Papel."
Aufray is well known for his French adaptations of Bob Dylan's songs.
His sister was actress Pascale Audret (1936–2000) and his niece is actress Julie Dreyfus.

Hugues Aufray's song Ne Me Quitte Pas (Don't Leave Me) is a poignant plea from a desperate lover to his partner, begging them not to leave him. The lyrics, in a poetic fashion, convey the message that the love they shared should not be discarded easily. The first verse is a plea to forget the past misunderstandings and wasted time and to embrace the present, as they still have much time to make things right. The singer is asking their partner not to give up on their relationship and to stay. The chorus line of "Ne me quitte pas" (Don't leave me) is repeated often as a desperate plea to his lover.
The indulgent lover in verse two promises to offer his love, a rain of pearls from a land where it never rains, and if that isn't enough, he will make a domain where love reigns supreme. His love for his partner is so great that he will work beyond death to cover their body in gold and light. The third and final verse sees the singer continuing his desperate plea for his lover not to leave him. He promises to invent insane words that will make sense to his lover, and reminisces about lover's past who saw their hearts inflamed twice.
