Honestly, to fight the battle the 7th did, to inflict so many casualties upon the enemy, with half the company draftees, was amazing. Up there with the Spartans.

They should have been wiped off the face of the earth, not a man left, it shoulold have been the USA worst defeat since WW2.

BUT Hal Moore was there, the enemy did not plan for Hal Moore. Nor Plumley or the rest of the Men who foought that battle.

It is text book material. No less relevant today than then.

All the Ps and a great leader, who led many other great leaders in battle.

Every American Soldier should have died that day, and all the pilots.

The Humility of the Vietnamese needs to be recognised.

I think you need to look at the situation a little closer. Let's say you are in charge... And a young shaking enemy soldier tells you there 3 Battalions on the Massif and they want to kill you. Well that is information that could be true, or not. Last I heard the Army doesn't run the other way when they find the enemy they have been looking for after several months. Maybe your Army is different. The problem is that if you decide to leave every man on the ground when that decision is made will be killed. As all those men come back to the LZ with the enemy chasing and there is not enough time to get loaded onto the helicopters and get out without the enemy closing in and killing them all.
Hal Moore is a legend and his decisions saved them all. If we do it your way everyone dies.
Here are the objectives
Shuttle in the rest of his men from 14 miles to the rear on 16 Huey helicopters
Holding onto the clearing so that the Hueys can land and take off
Carry the fight to the numerically superior force as far into the jungle as possible so as to control the edges of the clearing
So what do you do when you discover you are outnumbered? You run and you all Die
Hal Moore digs in.
You don't have to tell me I'm wrong, I'd just like for you to explain option 2.

@Plen122 Yeah, there was serious problems in the ranks because so many were there involuntarily, especially late in the war. But that started happening after the public already largely turned against the war, and that those serving knew lives were flat out being wasted. If it is a just war the public supports, those problems will be minimal. If not for the draft, we fighting in Vietnam until the 1980s.

@Law V it has possibilities, one of my favorite sci fi authors, Heinlein, advocated draft for all those who want the right to vote. Or there's what you're suggesting, draft for EVERYONE I guess? Only problem with that is it could seriously damage cohesion. It's tough to MAKE people do something they don't want to. That could lead to some bad things.

@Plen122 With a draft, the whole country has skin in the game. Now the politicians just draw in America's poor to fight the wars in exchange for college money. They didn't even raise taxes for the recent wars. Most of the public couldn't even tell the country had two wars going on. The all volunteer military sounds better than a draft, but it's far more insidious. Tell me Iraq and Afghanistan would have lasted as long as they did if there was a draft...

What struck me, is how incredibly accurate the movie "We Were Soldiers" is to how the place actually looked. Many times in movies, even movies that claim to be as picture perfect as possible to the events, and locations, are almost always way off in big ways... The Ia Drang valley in that movie is almost identically perfect to the actual location. I wish more movies did that.

@D P Sorry but the Americans weren’t “wiped out” at Albany. The air strikes saved them from being wiped out and the vietnamese retreated after 100s of them were taken out by napalm. There were no front lines in Nam so whoever was left standing on the battlefield was the victor, and the Americans were there to count the bodies after X-Ray and Albany. That's why "We were soldiers" had the fictional bayonet charge - it was meant to be symbolic of their bravery & victory.

Actually I know of very few movies that claim to be very accurate, or almost totally accurate, 100% accurate, etc. Maybe you're confusing that with the language "based on real events", or maybe what the director has said in interviews, etc but if you read closely, I'll bet they don't claim total accuracy. And there's no need for them to, if you want better accuracy, then watch documentaries.

You can watch interviews with veterans talking about war but it really tells the story when they’re physically there in the exact places it all happened, this is an amazing eye opening documentary

What amazes me is that even though acknowledge what Joe Galloway did, the Army combat videographers are never mentioned, identified, or given any credit for shooting video while the battle was unfolding. We do not even know any of their names, yet they were under the same deadly fire that Joe Galloway and the other soldiers were under. Would love to see them identified and given recognition that they never ever recieved!

So humbling to see these men reliving these horrible past experiences. The pain that stayed with them is obvious to see, but I hope that there was closure in being back at that place, too. Finally being able to associate it with something other than the brutality of war. If any veterans are reading this, have you ever revisited an area you fought in? How did you feel? Thanks and gratitude to these brave solders. My dad flew helicopters in Vietnam during my childhood and I used to watch the war on TV with my heart pounding wildly when helicopters were shown. I was scared chitless my entire childhood that he would be shot down and killed or taken as a POW. God Bless you brave men.

One of my drill instructors in "Basic" survived the first phase of this battle. He told us that when, at 20, he got home from Vietnam he sat on the front porch of his parents' home and drank until either the booze ran out or he passed out. When it occurred to him, he was on a road to nowhere he went back into the Army. I was in his last training platoon before he retired with the rank of Sergeant First Class/E-7.

A salute to "SFC C", thirty-four years later. I read the book about this battle and saw the movie. But I suspect that neither one really did justice to just how bad the Ia Drang must have been.

Moores leadership and direct battle field adjustments in real time on the ground is what saved the battle without him there they would of more than likely been overrun and slaughtered even with air support by the shear numbers of NVA. He was truly a great leader.

Fighting the French and Japanese prior and after the US they fought the Chinese last. They outlasted everyone with far less abilities living subterranean cities literally engineered for decades. US could have nuked Vietnam too and they still wouldn't surrender. They were not like the Japanese or Koreans. They wouldn't have an armistice and refused to surrender. Even when taken over by the Japanese they still didn't surrender.

So actually there were two battles in Ia Drang Valley on Nov 1965.

The first one at Landing Zone X-ray involved the the 1st Battalion under LCol Moore while
the second one at Landing Zone Albany involved the 2nd Battalion.

The difference is the first one was prepared and ready
while the second one was complacent and had their guard down.

Maybe not completely understand but I do some. My brother went in at 17 in '65. USN FMF Corpsman, later Ret. Every week I watch the body count, got pissed off watching the game being played. But the time I got out of high school in '69 I was ready to go, really wanted to fly choppers. My generation was over there in trouble and I wanted to go help in some way. Tired of all the protest and way the guys were being treated here in uniform. Went to take medical and was turned down because of a medical thing that I didn't think would stop me, a problem cropping up some during high school. Got a 1-Y card out of it. Not the same guilt as being in battle. But yeah, guilt that they died and I wasn't allowed to go help.

The movie "We Were Soldiers" is unusual in that Hal Moore mostly approved it for its accuracy. This is not common for historic battles turned in to films.

Great story and preserved forever now on film, albeit with some inaccuracies.
Just as interesting is the story of platoon leader Rick Rescorla, who served at the battle of la Drang, but also was a key figure in the World Trade Centre evacuation saving inumerable lives during the 911 attacks.

@Don Rounds That's Randall Wallace who directed the movie and wrote the screenplay. Moore and Galloway wrote the book adapted by Wallace. Gibson mainly acted in the movie, did a very good job as Hal Moore's own kids thought the portrayal was spot on

Gibson wanted to redress the balance whereby there were a slew of Vietnam movies that were negative in terms of their basic potrayal of the mission and the morality of the individual soldiers.
He wanted to covey the acts of heroism and bravey exemplified by these young men and as covered in Moore's book, rather than the usual "baby killer" narrative.

@Don Rounds The movie is approx 75% accurate. The Director attributes certain actions to the wrong Soldier but mostly gets it right without getting too Hollywood.
The charge at the end is pure fantasy. In the real battle the NVA probed and charged until they proved to themselves it was a bad idea. From the real battle the enemy developed a blueprint (pamphlet) called how to defeat the Americans.

The photo of the soldier at 4:41 in black and white was Rick Rescorla, who died evactuating people from the South tower during 9/11 which I've read apparently saved thousands of lives.

2,800 lives. Very rich lives, yet the statue of Rescorla at the Infantry Museum is in need of repair. You'd think Morgan Stanley/ Dean Witter or whatever they call themselves now would pass a hat for collection to make sure the statue of the guy who saved them all is in top condition...at least as long as they all get to live

Wow...the Vietnamese was just as intelligent as Hal Moore in the way that they were in the same chess game. Even with the technology we have now it seems we've lost the intelligences of the leaders like Hal Moore. You would think with the technology we have now we wouldn't lose as many soldiers as we do.

Very good documentary. I saw it when it was first broadcast. Prompted me to read Hal Moore's book and Larry Gwin's book "Baptism" which I have both read several times. I do have to take issue factually at 6:20 where the Huey is "shot down" in enemy footage "seen for the first time". This film of the crash appears in the 1966 documentary "The Anderson Platoon". It was a supply chopper that hit a palm tree after lifting off. In the "Anderson Platoon" you plainly see the helicopter strike the tree.

Why nobody doing documentaries like this one today? Those veterans who are eyewitnesses slowly dying and we loosing chance to let them narate their stories which are important to remember to prevent repetition of these horrible events.

Moore just said in this video he had no idea how many VC were out there at 7:10.

I found this video after watching a speech from the late 90s, were he said he knew there were approximately 3 battalions, and it was confirmed by a captured VC when they landed there were three battalions.

Either way, you would think it was obvious you were outnumbered, oh say around the second hour of the battle, if not the second day.

probably a good metaphore for the whole Vietnam war, and they kept just doubling down on the same failed tactics and strategy.

open up a copy of the "art of war", it reads like a check list of errors moore made from start to finish at this battalion, and the entire war.

If it hadn't been for the overwhelming airpower of the US forces this could have turned into a mini Dien Bien Phu. The NVA surrounded them and held the high ground.

Correct if it hadn't been for...Air Cav's Air power after developing and practicing the new principles of Heliborne warfare. The US surely would have "gone down fighting"
BUT the AIR CAV did have AIR power. As for the high ground the massif was too far away from the clearing to be relevant with the weapons the NVA walked down the Ho-Chi trail.
Speaking of Dien Bien Phu...How did the high ground work out for the French? P.S. The NVA did not come close to surrounding the US. Bill Beck took care of that with Russell Adams M-60.

I remember the scene in the movie where luetinent Herrick ran into the trap maybey it was the will to live that allowed sgt savage and the rest of the men to put up such a hard fight that kept the NVA from overunning them in that area.....they were right in thw heart ofnthe enemies positions

No matter how you feel about this country, its politics, its wars or how you feel about the Vietnam war, you better by god respect these men, if you don't them you are a sorry excuse for a human being and can only stay free by the grace of men like these, you have every right to express your opinions because men like these died to make sure you keep that right. No man should be allowed to order other men to war without himself knowing the real cost of battle. And the only way to know the real cost of war is to have fought and lived thru one. There is no glory in seeing your buddies killed and having to kill. I am not saying war is never the option just that all other choices must be exhausted first.
