Wartime brought some problems, because her parents were interned as they were Italian citizens still, altho she and her brother Ubaldo were both born in England.
Continuing to sing and perform, and record with bands such as Harry Roy's and Eric Winstone her success continued. Ubaldo became a violinist in the Mantovani Orchestra. She was much in demand on the variety circuit, including the Embassy Club and the Copacabana, and for 2 years at the Celebrity Club in Bond Street. Soon she had nearly two years with the BBC Show Band, under Cyril Stapleton, making three two hour broadcasts each week. She also featured on the Goon Show in the early 1950s.
A career change came when Radio 2 gave her a twice weekly slot, which lasted 5 years. She also guested on other radio shows. In 1977 she had a radio show broadcasting 3 times a week, aimed at listeners who lived alone. It aimed to put such persons in touch with others in similar circumstances, with her reading out some of their letters, which came in in excess of 1,000 a week, and once a week she sang, with a backing quartet, for the audience. Known as Julie Dawn's Penfriend Programme it ran for 10 years. Her soothing voice and sympathetic approach made the programme popular.
Twice married , she outlived both her husbands.

All I do is look at you
For I seem to find peace of mind
And I never get lonely
When you shine from afar
With you way up there
I don't dare to have a care
Lets me know that you know
That I'm not blue, blue star
With you way up there
I don't dare to have a care
For I want to show that your glow
Lets me know that you know
That I'm not blue, blue star
The song "Blue Star" by Julie Dawn is a soothing ballad about finding comfort and peace in an unexpected place. The lyrics describe the singer's relationship with a star in the night sky. When she is feeling blue and lonely, she looks up at the star and finds solace in its light. The star represents a constant presence in her life, and she feels reassured by its distance and unchanging nature. The singer suggests that the star's glow is not just a reflection of its own light, but a symbol of the mutual acknowledgement and understanding between herself and the star. The song is a tender ode to the power of nature to offer comfort and solace in difficult times.
One interesting fact about the song is that it was written by Hoagy Carmichael, a prolific songwriter in the 20th century known for hits like "Stardust" and "Georgia on My Mind." Carmichael was a jazz pianist and composer who wrote over 400 songs throughout his career. "Blue Star" was first recorded by Tommy Dorsey and his Orchestra in 1940, and has since been covered by many artists in various genres.
Another notable version of "Blue Star" was recorded by jazz singer Blossom Dearie in 1958. Dearie's interpretation of the song emphasizes the playful and whimsical aspects of the lyrics, making it a charming addition to her repertoire.
The song's popularity has endured over the years, with covers by artists like Tony Bennett, Willie Nelson, and Linda Ronstadt. Its simple melody and poignant lyrics continue to resonate with listeners.
