His father was a UNESCO employee and his mother is from Guadeloupe. Many of the chansons he sings were written by Étienne Roda-Gil, a long time collaborator. His brother, Gérard Leclerc, is a political commentator on France 2.
For a time he was involved with French actress Miou-Miou, who in 1978 bore him a daughter, Jeanne Herry. Like her father, Jeanne has pursued a career in show business, albeit as an actress and comedian rather than as a singer.
Julien Clerc owes his fame in France to his leading role in the 1969 French language adaptation of the musical Hair. Since then he has sung a great many popular songs, and is generally considered one of the greatest francophone musicians of his generation. In 2003, he was appointed as a Goodwill Ambassador for the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees after transferring the rights to his hugely popular song, Partir, to the UN.

Ooh…hoo…ooh
Ho..oh…oh…yeah
Ooh…ooh…hoo…ooh
Yeah…
Did I hear you say that
You want another chance
You're ready to reclaim your prize
So you want my love back [So you want my love back]
Why'd you let it slip away
Why'd you ever let me go
Your change of heart has come too late
Well, the door is locked
You can't get in
The game is changed
You've been
Too gone (Oh, ho, oh) too long, baby (Mmm…)
To ever get back again in (In) my (My) heart (Heart)
Too gone (Oh, ho, oh) too long, baby (Too long)
You're too many tears to late
To ever come back, to get back in my arms
Been gone too gone, too long
Don't you hear me say that
You'd be a fool to leave
You'd regret the road you chose
You'd come running right back to me [You'd come running back to me]
You had such a good love, sugar
You'll never find in no one else
But what I knew all the time
You had to find out for yourself
But now you'll never know
That love again
You're on your own
You've been too gone, baby
Too gone, too long, baby (Woo, much too long, yeah)
To ever get back again (Uh, uh, uh) in (In) my (My) heart (Oh, oh, oh…)
Too gone, (Too long) too long, baby
You're too many tears too late (Just too late)
To ever come back, to get back in my arms (Oh, oh, ooh)
Been gone, too gone, too long
Did you really think I'd take you back
Let in you back in my life, oh, baby, just like that
Someone new is loving me
Loving you is what used to be
Baby, you're too late to win my heart again
Too gone, too long, baby (Too gone)
To ever get back again (Ever) in my heart (In my arms)
Too gone, too long, baby
You're too many tears too late (Too late)
To ever (Too gone) come back, to get back to me never
Too gone (Too gone, too long) too long, baby (Oh, oh, oh, oh, ho, yeah)
To ever get back again (No, never) in (No, never) my heart (Oh…oh)
Too gone, too long, baby (Just too long, baby)
You're too many tears too late
To ever come back, to get back in my arms again
I don't need you, I don't want you
Later for you, baby
Oh, oh
Hit the road, Jack
And don't you come back, no more, no more, oh, oh
Oh, oh, oh, oh, yeah, yeah , oh, oh, oh, yeah
Too gone, too long, too gone, too long (Ho, hey, hey, hey, hey)
Back in my heart
Too gone (Too) too long (Too) too gone (Oh, ooh, yeah) too long
Back in my heart
The song “Le Phare des Vagabondes” by Julien Clerc talks about a lover who wants to come back after losing the love of the person he/she once deeply cared for. The song chords are in the key of F and it starts with "Oh, ho, yeah" and "Ooh, hoo, ooh" in the first verse. The singer reminisces of the moments they once shared and how much the person has missed their partner’s love. However, it is revealed that the love is too late; the door is locked and the game has changed. The singer has moved on and doesn't want to take that person back as they have already cried too many tears.
In the second verse, the singer reminds the person that he/she will regret the road they chose and when they do, they will come running back to the singer, but this time it will be too late. The person has lost their chance and they can never have the singer’s love again. The chorus then repeats the fact that the lover is “Too gone, too long” to ever have a chance of getting back into the singers’ heart and arms.
In conclusion, the song talks about lost love and how the healing process takes place after one ends a relationship. It highlights the fact that love waits for no one, and when someone lets it slip away by being gone too long, it is nearly impossible to recover it again.
