Derided by critics early in his career, Weiland was known for his flamboyant and chaotic onstage persona; he was also known for constantly changing his appearance and vocal style, for his use of a megaphone in concerts for vocal effect, and for his battles with substance abuse. Now widely viewed as a talented and versatile vocalist, Weiland has been ranked in the Top 100 Heavy Metal Vocalists by Hit Parader (No. 57).
In 2012, Weiland formed the backing band The Wildabouts. The band received mixed reviews, and some critics and fans noted Weiland's failing health. In December 2015, Weiland died of an accidental drug overdose on his tour bus in Minnesota at the age of 48. Upon his death, many critics and peers offered re-evaluations of Weiland's life and career; those critics included David Fricke of Rolling Stone and Billy Corgan of The Smashing Pumpkins, who identified Weiland as one of the "voices of the generation" alongside Kurt Cobain and Layne Staley.

Scott Weiland Lyrics

Here it goes again
Just a-dealin' with the buzzards
Out in nowhere mans' land
Eat lies, eat stories
Now the truth be told
That the soul you sold
Of fool's gold
So come one
Come all
'Cause the circus back in town
It's a-promisin' to give you anything
If you can keep it down
So strap on in, yeah
It needs to fill
'Cause you're going on a ride
That will blow your mind
And shoot to thrill
Well I come my way
And I ain't going to no place I don't belong
Yeah you might call it grace
But I'm still riding and cussin'
Like a rollin' stone
Oh yeah, my Momma always said to me
To stay to stay away from freaks
And certain carnival disease
But they always seem to find a certain way back in my city
And they'll always tell you lies and make you feel so pretty
Now take a little minute of your second-hand watch
Just take a quick peek at all the stories being bought
Just a-movin' and a-groovin' now just for you
And if you wait a little longer
Then the monkeys fly too
Well I come my way
And I ain't going to no place I don't belong
Yeah you might call it grace
But I'm still riding and cussin'
Like a rollin' stone
So strap on in now
Time to meet the man
The man who's gonna take you for a ride
Hit it
Oh yeah, wait a minute
Here it goes again
Just a-dealin' with the buzzards
Out in nowhere man's land
Eat lies, eat stories
Now the truth be told
That the soul you sold
Is less than a dollar's worth
Of fool's gold
Well I come my way
And I ain't going to no place I don't belong
Yeah you might call it grace
But I'm still riding and cussin'
Like a rollin' stone
The song "Modzilla" by Scott Weiland & the Wildabouts is a commentary on the entertainment industry, particularly the music industry. The lyrics suggest that the industry is full of deceit and falsehoods, with the "buzzards" representing the industry executives who prey on artists with promises of fame and fortune.
The chorus, "Come one, come all, 'cause the circus back in town," implies that the whole music industry is like a circus, promising anything to keep people entertained. The line "the soul you sold is less than a dollar's worth of fool's gold" suggests that artists who compromise their integrity for the sake of success are ultimately betrayed and left with nothing.
The verses talk about the singer's attitude towards the industry. He refuses to go where he doesn't belong, indicating that he values his authenticity over fame. The reference to the Rolling Stones in the last verse also suggests that he sees himself as a rebel and a rock and roll icon.
Overall, "Modzilla" is a cautionary tale about the dangers of selling out and compromising one's artistic vision in the pursuit of fame.
Line by Line Meaning
Oh yeah, wait a minute
Here we go again with another round of deception and manipulation
Here it goes again
The cycle of lies and deceit repeats itself
Just a-dealin' with the buzzards
Fighting against those who prey on others for personal gain
Out in nowhere mans' land
In a desolate place where people are vulnerable to exploitation
Eat lies, eat stories
Accepting and internalizing falsehoods and manipulations
Now the truth be told
Exposing the reality of the situation
That the soul you sold
The part of oneself that was given away for personal gain
Is less than a dollar's worth
The value given in exchange for the soul is insignificant
Of fool's gold
What was received in exchange was a deception; something that appears valuable but is actually worthless
So come one
Invitation to join the group being targeted for manipulation
Come all
Everyone is welcome
'Cause the circus back in town
The group that uses manipulation and deception has returned
It's a-promisin' to give you anything
The group claims it can provide whatever is wanted
If you can keep it down
But only those who don't question or resist will get what they're promised
So strap on in, yeah
Prepare yourself for the ride
It needs to fill
The group needs more people to manipulate and take advantage of
'Cause you're going on a ride
The people who join the group are in for a wild, unpredictable experience
That will blow your mind
The experience will be intense and overwhelming
And shoot to thrill
The group is promising excitement and pleasure
Well I come my way
The singer is choosing to resist the manipulations of the group
And I ain't going to no place I don't belong
He refuses to be taken advantage of by the group
Yeah you might call it grace
He sees his strength and perseverance as a gift given to him
But I'm still riding and cussin'
He may be strong, but he's not happy about the situation
Like a rollin' stone
He's moving through life without a set destination, but is not easily manipulated
Oh yeah, my Momma always said to me
The singer's mother warned him about dangerous people
To stay to stay away from freaks
She advised him to avoid people who were strange or dangerous
And certain carnival disease
She specifically warned him against getting caught up with people who were part of a traveling carnival
But they always seem to find a certain way back in my city
Despite his mother's advice, the singer is still confronted by dangerous people
And they'll always tell you lies and make you feel so pretty
The dangerous people will try to convince you of things that aren't true, to gain your trust and manipulate you
Now take a little minute of your second-hand watch
Take a moment to consider how you're spending your time
Just take a quick peek at all the stories being bought
Consider how people are being manipulated with lies and false promises
Just a-movin' and a-groovin' now just for you
Despite the manipulation and danger, people are still drawn into the excitement of the situation
And if you wait a little longer
If you stay involved for too long
Then the monkeys fly too
You'll see crazy, unpredictable things happen
Time to meet the man
It's time to meet the person who will try to manipulate you
The man who's gonna take you for a ride
The person who will mislead and exploit you
Hit it
Start the ride; the manipulation is about to begin again
